The National Police Service (NPS) has launched a manhunt for a university graduate believed to be behind a bhang growing business in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu county, run using smart technology.

Police officers had stormed the six-bedroomed mansion on Tuesday, July 5 following a tip-off from members of the public.

What they discovered was a farm with specialised technology to grow the illegal plant, including various LED lights in some sections of the house to provide lighting to the plants, which is essential for the growth of any plant.

They also found a number of personal documents, but the police did not explain the contents of those documents.

"Yesterday, the National Police Service officers conducted a successful intelligence-led operation at a  residence within Elgon View Estate in Eldoret Township.

"The officers conducted a thorough search in the two buildings within the compound and recovered 21 cannabis plants in the main bedroom, 68 in the sitting room, 14 in the dining room, 26 in an adjacent iron sheet walled house and assorted personal documents," the NPS noted.

The documents were seized to aid in further investigations, with the plants believed to be worth Ksh1 million uprooted across the house.

The main suspect was identified as Kipchumba Michael Kibet, with the NPS urging the public to provide information that will lead to his arrest.

"All the plants were uprooted after having been documented by DCI Scenes of Crime personnel. The plants weighed 33.5 Kgs with a street value of about one million Kenya Shillings.

"We appeal for any information that can lead to the arrest of the suspect and urge the public to desist from engaging in criminal activities," added the NPS.

The raid comes amidst the viral fanfare generated by Roots party presidential candidate George Wajackoyah, who promised to legalise bhang if he is elected into power during the August 9 general elections.

"One acre of Marijuana can earn you Ksh8 million per harvest. The whole of Nyeri county is 583,000 acres. This means that if we grew Marijuana in Nyeri county, Nyeri residents will earn Ksh4.6 trillion per harvest.

"And because Marijuana is harvested twice a year, it means Nyeri residents will earn Ksh9.2 trillion every year. This means if we grow marijuana for export, Nyeri in one year will earn the equivalent of Ethiopia’s GDP," he said in his manifesto on Thursday, June 30.
