20 Church Members Killed After School Bus Capsizes In River (VIDEO)

20 people have been confirmed dead while 10 were rescued after a school bus they were travelling in was swept by the flooded waters of Enziu River in Mwingi, Kitui County.

A video seen by Viral Tea showed the bus attempting to cross the river before it capsized metres away from dry land.

Confirming the incident, Mwingi East Sub County Police Commander, Joseph Yakan revealed that the ten were undergoing first aid treatment.

“A bus drowned here and we are still recovering bodies that are still inside the bus. The bus is not even visible, it has been submerged.

“We have recovered 20 bodies. 10 people were also rescued alive,” Yakan told a local publication.

The victims were passengers of the St Joseph’s Seminary – Mwingi and were members of the Mwingi Catholic Church, headed for a wedding ceremony.

Yakan added that the driver of the bus also died during the accident.

“This is a river and it was flooding. The driver lost control and slid into a ditch.

“The bus capsized next to the bridge. The driver has also died. The bus was leaving Mwingi Central towards Nuu in Mwingi East,” he said.

Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna revealed on November 23, 2021 that so far 4,023 lives have been lost on Kenyan roads in the period between January and November 21, 2021,

This is in comparison to about 3,340 recorded deaths from January to December 2020, a sign of accidents being on the rise as Kenya inches closer to the festive season.
