Blogger Jailed For Extorting Senator Loitipip Over Viral Video

UPDATE Thursday, March 18: Jones Ochieng Mbolo, the blogger who leaked footage of Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip and a lady smoking shisha at a Nairobi restaurant has been jailed for one year.

He had pleaded guilty to attempting to extort money from Aeedah Bambi, daughter of politician Ahmed Ibrahim Papa, who was in the company of the youthful senator.

Magistrate Martha Mutuku who presided over the case ruled that Mbolo was not remorseful despite admitting his action.

A blogger, who has been trending for allegedly leaking footage of Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip and a lady smoking shisha at a Nairobi restaurant has pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to extort Ksh200,000.

Jones Ochieng Mbogo told the Milimani Law Courts that he recorded Loitiptip because he knew that shisha-smoking is currently outlawed in Kenya, the ban on its consumption effected in December 2017.

He recorded the senator smoking shisha on February 12, 2021, and confessed to sending the video to the senator through WhatsApp. The motive was to prompt Loitiptip to send him the Ksh200,000 to silence him.

The lawmaker, however, refused to bend the knee to the blackmail. Mbogo then sent Loitiptip another video allegedly showing the senator’s partner pleasuring herself in the restaurant.

Unmoved, Loitiptip stood his ground, a move that made Mbogo leak the video to the public via social media platforms, particularly through controversial blogger Edgar Obare via Instagram. This forced Loitiptip and his partner to file a police report, leading to the arrest of the suspect on Monday, February 15.

Mbogo told Milimani Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku on Wednesday, February 17 that he had in his possession a video of Loitiptip’s partner pleasuring herself in public.

“I did not share that [nude] video on social media out of respect for the senator’s right to privacy. However, I released the shisha video to out Loitiptip for engaging in illegal activity, yet, as a senator, he should be the custodian of the law,” added Mbogo.

The suspect will be detained at the Industrial Area Remand Prison until March 3, 2021, when his sentencing will be pronounced. Mbogo could face up to three years in jail for using threats in attempting to extort the complainants.

Loitiptip was at the shisha restaurant in the company of the lady identified as Aeedah Bambi. She is the daughter of politician Ahmed Ibrahim Papa who vid for the Lang'ata parliamentary seat in 2017 but lost.

The 23-year-old mother of one was married to businessman Steve Oduk but later separated. The owner of Plan 254 club in Kilimani Estate, Nairobi organized a Ksh 2.5 million baby shower for Bambi two years ago, which was attended by over 200 guests, including politician Babu Owino, KTN presenter Jamal Gaddafi, radio presenters, businessmen musicians, and those in showbiz circles.

Loitiptip is currently embroiled in a domestic row in which Saumu Mbuvi, the daughter of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, accused him on Tuesday, February 16 of attempting to kill her.
