Citizen TV found itself under heavy social media criticism yet again over the coverage of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga at the expense of Deputy President William Ruto.
It had interrupted its live coverage on Friday, October 15 to highlight Raila receiving an award at the Villa Rosa Kempinski Hotel in Nairobi while donning his traditional attire which evoked memories of his father, the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
He received the award for his efforts in campaigning for unity, democracy, and development for Kenya. Raila’s role towards peace, unity and development was also feted as the reason behind the prized award.

The awarding ceremony was organised by the Hekima Kaka Society which said that it awarded the ODM leader based on his historical handshake moment with President Uhuru Kenyatta on March 9, 2018, after the disputed 2017 General Election which was thrown out by the Supreme Court and ordered to be conducted afresh.
Following the coverage, Kenyans sharply criticised the station for biased reporting on its end, noting that it chose to leave Ruto out of its main feature slots which normally come minutes into the 9 pm news bulletin.
United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party digital strategist, Dennis Itumbi led the critics in shaming the station for favouring Raila into Ruto. He likened the media house to a US-based Fox News station.
“It is 9:37 pm, 34 minutes into News, no story on William Ruto. The Running order Citizen TV Kenya decided Ruto and the Hustler Nation belong to the filler part of the Bulletin. It is official Citizen TV is the FOX News of the 2022 Campaign, slanted for Raila Odinga – Ni sawa. Tupatane MBELE! (It is alright, we will meet in future),” Itumbi stated.
“Citizen TV and SK Macharia should know the majority of Kenyans don’t support Raila Odinga. I have officially switched off anything to do with Royal Media Services,” Daisy Kenyan added.
Daisy also dragged the RMS owner into the mix, alongside other supporters of DP Ruto especially after a photo of him presenting the award to Raila at the event surfaced online.
Elgeyo Marakwet County Senator Kipchumba Murkomen however defended the station from claims by Ruto’s proponents of bias.
“Sugoi man had told his supporters to boycott Citizen TV. I don’t know why William Ruto through his Bonoko Intelligence (HNIB) is fighting SK Macharia.
“By the way, TT minions should show us one major launched by Ruto in Uasin Gishu apart from Kimwarer dam in Moiben,” he wrote.
Macharia has been a vocal supporter of Raila Odinga and was part of the Mount Kenya Federation (MKF) endorsing Odinga’s bid to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022.
