The officers however are yet to trace the owner of the building who remains at large and has since gone into hiding following the Monday afternoon tragedy.

The contractor's arrest comes after the building he was supervising had collapsed, killing three and injuring seven people who were taken to the hospital as residents, rescue workers, and police were deployed on the scene.

Of the injured, six are still in the hospital.

The three deceased, two men and one woman, have also been identified and their bodies moved to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.

The rescue operation was suspended in the late hours of Monday evening as authorities ascertained that no person working at the site prior to the collapse was accounted for.

Moments after the buildings collapsed, residents had pulled a mother and a child who was crying inside the building.

Several construction workers had narrowly escaped death a few metres from the building which crumbled and were still in shock. They were working on one side of the building that was left with large cracks following the collapse.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the building became dangerous after it had developed the cracks. As a consequence, Regional Coordinator of the National Construction Authority (NCA), Eng. Amos Musau had in August 2020 issued the building's owner with a notice of closure for flouting building regulations.

The incident came one week after a five-storey building that partially collapsed in Kinoo, Kiambu County on Friday, September 3 was brought down on Monday, September 6.
