Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario and National Olympic Committee Kenya official Stephen Soi have been found guilty of corruption by a Nairobi court.

The two were on Wednesday, September 15 convicted over abuse of office with regard to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games scandal.

Wario had earlier been charged with 4 counts, the first count being engaging in a project without prior planning contrary to Section 45 (2) (c) as read with sections 48 (1) of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act No. 3 of 2003.

The officials were dragged into the brazen corruption scandal amounting to Ksh88 million that dogged team Kenya during the showpiece in Brazil.

In its case, prosecutors alleged that officials of the NOCK together with the Ministry of Sports engaged in the planning and management of funds meant for the Rio Olympics without exercising proper management thus resulting in the loss of public funds.

The prosecution accused Wario of improperly conferring a benefit on three persons by including them in the delegation to Rio.

It also called 22 witnesses while Wario was put to the defense team and called seven supporting witnesses.

Wario is the highest-ranking official in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government to be convicted of corruption.

The trained anthropologist served in Uhuru’s Cabinet from 2013 to 2018, upon which he was dropped down to Ambassador to Austria where he serves at the moment.
