“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 35 (1) of the Sports Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Culture, and Heritage appoints Humphrey Kayange and Tegla Lorupe to be members of the Board of the Kenya Academy of Sports Council, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 21st September 2021,” read the notice.

The Kenya Academy of Sports is a state corporation established under the Sports Act to develop sports talents through the formation and management of academies, training, and research for global competitiveness and sustainable socio-economic growth in Kenya.

The duo has made impressive strides on behalf of the country through their masterclasses in both rugby and sport.

Kayange was recently picked to serve in the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes Commission for a period of four years.

The 37-year-old who serves as an Athletes’ Representative at the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) was nominated in 2020 to contest for the Athletes’ Commission seat at the IOC in the elections for 2021.

The ex Shujaa captain was considering not taking part in the polls with Kenya fielding 87 athletes in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games compared to other nations like the USA and China who have a massive delegation, which created doubts that he would amass the required votes.

Kayange who was part of Team Kenya at the 2016 Rio Olympics was nominated for IRB Sevens Player of the Year in 2009 before being awarded the Presidential Order of Golden Warrior (OGW) for services in sport in 2010.

Loroupe on the other hand holds the world records for 20, 25, and 30 kilometres and previously held the world marathon record.

She is the three-time World Half-Marathon champion and became the first woman from Africa to win the New York City marathon. She has also won major races in London, Boston, Rotterdam, Hong Kong, Berlin, and Rome.

Other than that, she was played a key role in peacekeeping between warring communities in Pokot and Turkana by organising marathons through her Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation.
