IG Mutyambai Goes After Officers Raiding Karen Bar In Viral Video

Mutyambai sent two senior police officers from the Internal Affairs Unit to the premises where they recorded statements from the workers who were on duty on Wednesday.

Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai has ordered a probe to be conducted on police officers filmed taking all manner of expensive drinks on Wednesday, August 11 at Spasso Restaurant and Bar in Karen, Nairobi.

Mutyambai sent two senior police officers from the Internal Affairs Unit to the premises where they recorded statements from the workers who were on duty on Wednesday.

The officers are believed to have escaped with drinks worth Ksh110,000.

Robert Shaw, an economist who had gone to the restaurant to buy dinner that day, also detailed of the story as a scary one in a recorded statement.

According to him, two police officers gatecrashed the restaurant at 8.30 pm and headed straight for the bar demanding the bartender for drinks.

The bartender was initially hesitant, a manner which forced the officers to shove her off their way and take those drinks themselves.

“I wondered whether they were actual police officers. One of the officers told me to go back to my country,” Shaw told the Standard

“The officer talked to me in a very demeaning manner…. It is important to point out that they did not state under which Act or piece of legislation they were doing this and for what reasons,” he added.

The hotel’s workers had reported that they had not broken any COVID-19 rules.

The video shared widely on social media platforms showed the officers daring restaurant patrons to snitch on them to Mutyambai.

The patrons could be heard defending themselves stating that they had not broken any curfew laws but their pleas fell on deaf ears.

“No, you are behind the law, you don’t know the law,” one of the officers stated.

It mirrors a similar incident where six police officers were caught on CCTV stealing from a bar in Kayole estate, Nairobi. The Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji has since ordered their arrest and prosecution.
