Kenyan rapper Julius Owino, popularly known as Juliani, has dismissed reports that he was appointed the Director of Entertainment in Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party.

In a statement dated Tuesday, May 10, the rapper denied reports that were gathering momentum on Monday, May 9 that he was appointed to the coalition under President Uhuru Kenyatta and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, Raila Odinga.

He clarified that he was not communicated formally about the job and that he was not hired, or affiliated with any political party.

“It has been brought to my attention that there is information circulating online about my appointment as Director of Entertainment in the Azimio – OKA coalition. I would like to clarify that this has not been communicated to me formally or otherwise.

“Therefore I would like to confirm that I am not employed or affiliated with any political party in Kenya or beyond,” he explained.

Juliani, whose music serves as an inspiration to Kenyan youth, noted that he would however work with any politician who has a vision just like his.

Despite his role in youth empowerment to champion social justice, he added that it did not give him the luxury to stay away from governance issues.

“I am willing to join hands with like-minded partners including political parties that have a clear manifesto and agenda focusing primarily on sustainable youth empowerment initiatives,” he added.

The Utawala hitmaker then listed an array of issues to be addressed such as youth empowerment, gender equality and gender-based violence (GBV) ending extrajudicial killings, promoting social justice as well as climate change.

“I would like to urge my fellow Kenyans to use wisdom and vote for leaders who will bring change and avoid falling into the trap of being blinded by handouts. I would also like to discourage politicians from using our youth for their own selfish gains,” he added.

Many believed that it was Juliani’s appointment that forced Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua to dump Azimio for the Kenya Kwanza Alliance by Deputy President William Ruto. However, Mutua announced that he separated with the Azimio coalition which had sidelined his Maendeleo Chap Chap party in important matters.

Also trending on social media with Juliani was Lillian Nganga, with the pair not just getting engaged but getting married.

The low-key wedding was held at the Paradise Gardens in Kiambu County with the reception event held at Kentwood Address in Runda, Nairobi on Wednesday, February 2, attended by less than 50 guests including activist Boniface Mwangi and his wife, Njeri Mwangi. Mwangi was amongst Juliani’s best men.

Rumours of their relationship began surfacing on social media in 2021 as soon as Lilian announced that she had separated from Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua. However, Lilian and Juliani, while declaring their relationship official in September of that year, shared a selfie together, captioning that they are adults who chose to be together.

“In this photo are two fully conscious adults who have chosen to be together. Any other narrative is false outdated and ill-intentioned.

“Let’s respect each other’s choices. Love & Let Love,” they shared.
