Kalonzo Explains U-Turn In Raila Running Mate Interview

Wiper Democratic Movement party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has explained that he chose to attend the interview for the running mate position of Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya flagbearer Raila Odinga out of a risk of being excluded from consideration.

While addressing journalists after the interview on Tuesday, May 10, Kalonzo believed that he would have been easily struck out of the shortlist if he stood his ground and refused to attend the interview.

Kalonzo assured that he was the most qualified person for the role, given that he served as Kenya’s Vice President to the late Mwai Kibaki.

He also served as Raila’s running mate in two elections, meaning he was well poised to take up the role ahead of the August 9, 2022, general elections.

He expressed optimism nonetheless that the panel would consider him for the final selection, which Raila would announce after the lapse of the deadline on Tuesday.

“The decision to come was my own because I realized we (Wiper) did not want to give anybody an excuse whatsoever to say we refused to come. I am here and I can tell you it was a wonderful conversation.

“Leaders such as Bishop Njenga, Archbishop Zacchaeus Okoth, I looked at that and said why wouldn’t I want to go greet Archbishop Okoth at his age?” he posed.

While noting that he decided upon himself to attend the interview, he did not reveal the inner workings of the interview to the public and had left it to the panel to pick a suitable candidate for Raila.

“I took that decision. I am not at liberty to divulge the contents of that conversation,” he added.

The Kalonzo Musyoka Command Centre, in a letter seen by Viral Tea, had confirmed his attendance at the Serena Hotel in Nairobi and was on time at the venue when his car pulled up to the entrance.

He had previously vowed not to face the panel, with his allies terming him as an ‘overqualified’ candidate and should be handed the job on a plate to ensure victory for the coalition in the August 9 elections.

His party had already submitted the nomination documents to the panel, with chances for him to secure the prized position heightened by Baringo Senator Gideon Moi and his Kenya African National Union (KANU) party.

“I have so much respect for the selection panel. Let them not perceive me as a rude person.

“But it’s Kenyans who have said that Kalonzo has been the Vice President to late President Mwai Kibaki for five years, Kalonzo has been Raila Odinga’s running mate from 2013 and 2017, what kind of interview is this which you are going for?” he posed while addressing residents of Sultan Hamud and Emali town in Machakos on Thursday, May 5, respectfully adding that he would not attend the interview.

Moi had dropped his own bid for the Deputy President role after he did not turn up for the interviews on Monday, May 9, opting to endorse Kalonzo for the position.
