KDF Chopper Crashes in Kajiado, Killing 10 Soldiers

A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) chopper crashed in Kajiado County on Thursday, June 24, killing 10 soldiers and injuring 13.

The aircraft went down in flames at Ol Tepesi area in Ngong, according to a video shared on social media.

"Today, at around 0900 hours, an Mi 171e Air Force Helicopter, on a training mission crash landed at the Ol Tepesi area in Ngong, Kajiado County," stated the KDF in a notice seen by Viral Tea.

KDF added that all passengers on board the plane had been accounted for and evacuated to safety.

"The injured were airlifted and are at the Defense Forces Memorial Hospital, Nairobi.

"Regrettably, following the crash, we suffered fatalities. The process of communicating with the families to relay the information and KDF condolences are underway," read the statement in part.

KDF did not, however, reveal the number of passengers who had succumbed to the injuries.

Aircraft accident investigators are at the crash site to establish what could have caused the accident. It took place just days after a plane headed to Nairobi from Ukunda crashed at the Tsavo East National Park.

The pilot had tried to make an emergency landing after the plane developed mechanical challenges mid-air.

One of the wings hit a tree, causing the plane to lose balance. According to the police, none of the two occupants was injured.

The accident comes a few days after two people lost their lives on May 31 after their Cessna 172 crashed at Vuria Hills at Taita Taveta County.
