Kenya was on Wednesday, August 9 selected to host the 8th International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) forum where aviation industry players from Africa and the Indian Ocean are expected to meet in a single setting.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) will convene the Africa-Indian Ocean (AFI) Aviation Week which will take place from August 21-25, 2023 in Nairobi.

According to KCAA Director General Emile Arao, various issues pertaining to the aviation sector will be deliberated during the five-day forum which has attracted over 300 delegates.

"Kenya was selected as the host State for this event and Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) being the lead organization in the hosting and development of this event, is committed to ensuring the event is successful and will not only provide a suitable environment for the discussions expected but also showcase Kenya as a leader in aviation and with a rich heritage," Arao stated.

KCAA Chairman Brown Ondego weighed in by noting that the event will be used to showcase Kenya's potential in aviation as well as other sectors.

“Hosting the 8th AFI-Aviation Week in Nairobi is a testament to Kenya's commitment to the development and enhancement of the aviation industry in the region. Nairobi, as a bustling hub for aviation and trade in East Africa, provides an ideal backdrop for this essential gathering of industry leaders and stakeholders,” Ondego commented.

AFI Aviation Week will bring together delegates from various ICAO contracting States from Africa and the Indian Ocean (AFI) region affiliated to the ICAO Eastern and Southern Africa (ESAF) and Western and Central African (WACAF) Regional Offices.

The event is a prestigious gathering that brings together aviation professionals, industry leaders, and government officials from across the region and beyond.

It also serves as a platform for knowledge sharing, collaboration, and strategic discussions aimed at advancing aviation safety and fostering sustainable growth in the region.

Murkomen Bags Bilateral Air Services Deal With Somalia

At the same time, Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen announced that Kenya signed a Bilateral Air Services Agreement with the Federal Republic of Somalia, represented by the Country's Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Fardowsa Osman Egal, at Transcom House, Nairobi.

The agreement allows designated airlines of each Contracting Party to operate 7 weekly frequencies for passenger flights on specified routes as set out in the schedule of routes annexed to the ASA, while designated cargo flights may operate unlimited frequencies.

"It has also been agreed that the Civil Aviation Authorities of the Contracting Parties shall cooperate in the enhancement of mutual engagements in the field of civil aviation, capacity building, personnel training and experience sharing.

"The Agreement will be implemented administratively pending its full entry into force on the date of the last notification through diplomatic notes by one Contracting Party to the other upon fulfilment of internal legal procedures as per the Treaty Making and Ratification Act of 2012," stated the CS.
