Kenyans: Ezra Chiloba’s Govt Appointment Will Influence 2022 Elections

A section of Kenyans used the topic Ezra Chiloba to air out their views regarding the appointment announced by the authority on Tuesday, September 29, with many believing his appointment could swing the pendulum on the outcome of next year’s polls.

The appointment of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) CEO Ezra Chiloba to the Director-General of the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) has been met with negative reactions from Kenyans, with many believing that it will influence the outcome of the 2022 General Elections.

Chiloba was fired from the IEBC in October 2018 after he failed to appear before the disciplinary committee of the commission to answer queries regarding an audit.

“Ezra #Chiloba has been brought to Communications Authority to replicate the mess he created in IEBC. He’s been placed there to plan, organise and premeditate a system of 2022 elections rigging, a year to the polls. His former colleagues know this,” wrote Saddique Shaban, a journalist.

“Communications Authority (CA) is the organ that implements political decisions on internet, radio and TV shutdowns. 2022 being an election year, and with Uhuru so invested in manipulating his succession… Is it by mistake that Ezra Chiloba has been appointed DG of CA?” political activist, Waikwa Wanyoike, wondered.

UNDP’s Governance and Peacebuilding Regional Coordinator Dr Roselyn Akombe, who served with Chiloba, also offered her view on the matter, saying that the appointment to the DG position at CAK had sealed the 2022 elections.

In an additional tweet on Chiloba’s new appointment, Dr Akombe reminded her followers that CA is in charge of the electronic transmission of election results.

“It has taken three years, but it is out in the open. The next crew to lead the 2022 injustice is ready for their rewards. Rest in Peace Electoral Justice,” she posted at the beginning of the year.

At the time, she highlighted the appointments of Anne Nderitu as the Registrar of Political Parties, the appointment of former IEBC ICT Director James as Huduma Centre CEO and the then appointment of Chiloba in the Ministry of ICT.

In the statement released by the authority, Chiloba works as a policy consultant and Principle Partner with Chil and Kemp consultancy and an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

He has an undergraduate degree in Law from the University of Nairobi, a Master of Arts degree from Central European University in Hungary and a Master of Science degree in Program Management from the University of Oxford.

The former IEBC CEO holds a postgraduate diploma in law from Kenya School of Law and also holds a certificate in the Blockchain strategy program from Said Business School at the University of Oxford.
