Former Kakamega senator and United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary-General, Cleophas Malala, has invited members of the public to audition for the 'Echoes of War' play.

The casting call follows backlash over the production, which was initially slated to be staged by Butere Girls but drew criticism from certain leaders due to its subject matter, likened to affairs of the current government.

In a formal announcement, Malala stated that auditions will take place between April 22 and May 5. “If you are an actor, love the stage, and have the confidence to own a role, this is your moment,” read part of the announcement.

How To Audition

Kenyans passionate about theatre, with a flair for performance and stage confidence, are invited to participate by reviewing the script available on Malala’s TikTok page. After selecting a character, they’re expected to film a 30-second video acting out the role.

The videos should then be posted on both Instagram and TikTok, tagging Malala, its playwright, as participants await the shortlist of those who will be called in for in-person auditions.

This nationwide audition push follows recent remarks by the former Senator, who stressed that the final cast would include top-tier adult actors from across Kenya, set to perform the play at a public event.

Among those showing interest is Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang'wa, who hinted at auditioning for a role himself to tap back into his acting roots. "I think I should audition for a role in this play - to awaken my high school talent! Sijui ni audition kama Sultan?" the senator posed.

Synopsis (In Summary)

The play explores the challenges faced by young people in their fight for civil liberties, touching on themes like social justice, governance, and other issues that deeply connect with Generation Z.

Set in the imaginary Royal Velvet Emirates, the story unfolds in a post-civil war nation where youth lead efforts to rebuild critical institutions and push for reforms in healthcare, education, and the justice system.

The main character, Mustafa, is a final-year IT student who creates Telemedicine — a platform that links patients with doctors globally. But his past political commentary on social media, particularly about the war, puts him in conflict with those in power.

Another central figure, Anifa Imana, is an AI system that symbolises both the promise and the risks of using technology in governance.

Through these characters and themes, the play critiques how digital platforms influence politics and emphasises the pivotal role young people play in driving progress and societal transformation.
