Mbagathi Way Dubbed Raila Odinga Way To Be Closed Tomorrow

The closure was announced by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and will allow for the construction of a footbridge.

The Mbagathi Way in Nairobi, which was named Raila Odinga Way the previous night will be temporarily closed on Saturday, November 6.

The closure was announced by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and will allow for the construction of a footbridge.

KeNHA advised motorists in a statement to use the advised alternative routes as traffic will be disrupted for workers to erect a footbridge near the T-Mall roundabout.

The road will be reopened on Monday, November 8 at midnight to normal traffic flow. The authority also stated that the construction will be carried out in two phases.

“KeNHA wishes to notify the public that a section of Mbagathi Road, at the T-Mall Roundabout, will experience traffic disruptions. This follows the planned closure of the road to pave way for the erection of the T-Mall footbridge,” the statement read in part.

“The road will be closed on Saturday, November 6, 2021, from 12:00 midnight to Monday, November 8, 2021, at 12:00 midnight. The work is designed to take place in two phases, where appropriate directions will be provided as shown in the drawings below,” it added.

Motorists were further advised to exercise caution and road courtesy while driving on the road for better traffic management.

“KeNHA advises motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plan and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site,” the statement continued.

Mbagathi Way was recently christened the Raila Odinga Way after the former prime minister and ODM leader.

The renaming exercise took place on Thursday, November 4 and as of Friday morning, November 5, Kenyans trooped to the new signposts erected along the road to catch a glimpse of the new name.

Human rights activist Boniface Mwangi said that the renaming was a means of honouring Odinga for the fights he has endured in making Kenya a democratic country.

“He spent 10 years in custody because of advocating for democracy. For his service to this nation, he deserves a road, even an airport named after him. The older Raila is a traitor to his younger self,” he quoted on Twitter.

Following the exercise, a section of Kenyans have called for the Nairobi Expressway to be renamed after marathon great Eliud Kipchoge who retained his Olympic title in Tokyo this year.
