NMG Boss Picked As Media Owners Chair


He replaces Royal Media Services (RMS) Managing Director Wachira Waruru who stepped down from the role after three terms in office.

Nation Media Group CEO Stephen Gitagama has been elected as the new Media Owners Association (MOA) chairman.

He replaces Royal Media Services (RMS) Managing Director Wachira Waruru who stepped down from the role after three terms in office.

Gitagama bears an MBA and a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) from the University of Nairobi and is a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya. He previously served as a Finance Director at the East African Breweries Limited (EABL).

Other new MOA officials elected into office were Standard Media Group CEO Orlando Lyomu and Radio Africa Group Chief Operating Officer Agnes Kalekye.

Waruru had been in the post since April 2018 when he was elected unopposed during the association’s annual general meeting. He succeeded magazine publisher, Dr Hannington Gaya who had also served for a period of three terms. 

MOA is the governing umbrella body representing the interest of media houses in Kenya. 

Its members comprise of Royal Media Services Limited, Standard Group PLC, Nation Media Group, Capital Group Limited, Ebru Africa Limited, Family Media Limited, Kass Media Group Limited, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), Media 7 Group, MediaMax Network Limited, Radio 44, Radio Africa Group, Switch TV, Three Stones Media Limited and TV 47.

The association works in tandem with the government and the private sector to advance media interests, coordinates with educational institutions on media training and development programmes. 

It also liaises and builds affiliations with other stakeholders, donors and international media organisations. 

In April 2020, MOA had made its mark on the fight against COVID-19 by donating Ksh150 million. 15 media houses, each contributed Ksh10 million in the form of advertisements to drive awareness campaigns about the pandemic.
