Peter Opondo's Replacement At KTN Announced

UPDATE 10.42: Standard Media Group has appointed KTN News anchor Sophia Wanuna to act as Peter Opondo's replacement.

In an internal memo seen by Viral Tea, Wanuna will take charge of editorial content in all the Standard Media Group's broadcasts divisions until further notice.

"Editorial staff are hereby notified to collaborate with Ms. Wanuna for purposes of keeping our broadcast operations and our promise to deliver quality, in-depth and timely content to the consumer on course," read the memo dated Monday, July 19 by editor-in-chief Ochieng Rapuro.

The media house added that Wanuna will take charge of the post beginning Thursday, July 15, 2021.

Media and Strategy consultant Peter Opondo spoke on Monday, July 19 following his firing from the Standard Media Group on Friday, July 16.

In a statement on his LinkedIn page, Opondo admitted that he was terminated from the media house.

However, he added that his immediate boss had launched a complaint against him to the Human Resource (HR) department, saying he was not the right person for the job.

"I have worked for many employers over the past 20 years...it is the first time I am (being) terminated for "unsatisfactory performance".

"There was no formal appraisal or feedback, there was no documentation or minutes about my alleged performance shortcomings, there was never discussion with or feedback from my boss, there was no PIP (Performance Improvement Plan). Just a sacking letter," Opondo begun.

Opondo was offered two choices by the media house's management; either sign the termination letter or resign on his own volition to guard his professional reputation.

"To "protect my professional reputation" - so that the company can announce I left to pursue "personal interests". I chose to embrace my sacking. I was fired. It is what it is. This is nothing to be ashamed about.

"It's someone's opinion about me, it doesn't change who I am. I am pretty sure I will be vindicated soon...So I own my low, and learn from it. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Fail early, fail often, fail forward. It is life!" he concluded.

Opondo had only worked at Standard Media Group for a period of five months. He was in charge of editorial content in all the Standard Media Group's broadcasts divisions.

According to sources who told Viral Tea, Opondo was allegedly linked closely to Deputy President William Ruto and was in charge of preparing his interviews at KTN News, a matter which did not sit well with the management.

Opondo's career has seen him navigate all media houses in Kenya. He had previously worked for Mediamax Network Limited as the Head of TV and Digital.

He resigned and what followed was an exercise where 90% of the entire K24 newsroom team were sent home after they opposed a 50 percent pay cut.

Opondo also worked at the Royal Media Services (RMS) as the Editorial Director. He has over 18 years of experience in broadcast, print, and digital media.
