NTV Snaps Up Ex-KTN Swahili Anchors

In a 47-second promo video shared to the station’s social media platforms, Mwaka and Matambo will host the 7 pm Kiswahili news bulletin from the first week of May.

Nation Media Group officially announced on Thursday, April 29 that two media personalities, Frida Mwaka and Lofty Matambo, have joined NTV after they recently resigned from KTN.

In a 47-second promo video shared to the station’s social media platforms, Mwaka and Matambo will host the 7 pm Kiswahili news bulletin from the first week of May.

In the video, Matambo and Mwaka can be seen on the street discussing the components of their combination on the live news bulletin as well as their timely exchanges in completing each other’s sentences, an indication of their strong chemistry on screen.

The announcement comes days after Matambo revealed that Sunday, April 18 would be his last bulletin at KTN News.

In his final heartfelt message, Matambo thanked his fans for supporting him and his employer, The Standard Group, for giving him the opportunity.

“For seven and a half years you have allowed me into your living rooms without knocking and you welcomed me with a smile. Those in the city watched me and those from the village followed my reports.

“For the zeal to have an upright society, I brought you Kimasomaso to condemn the evil in the society and uphold the good. They reached out to me and I answered the call, the call to say goodbye and pursue other things outside The Standard Media Group,” stated the journalist.

“Thanks to Standard Group PLC for this chance. Thanks to journalists, fellow anchors and editors. Thank you for being patient with me. Let us interact out there and God willing, we shall meet again,” he added, keeping fans at the time guessing on where he would be headed next.

On her part, Mwaka also called it quits at the Mombasa-Road-based TV station on March 21, 2021.

She joined the station in March 2018 to replace Mashirima Kapombe who had left KTN for Citizen TV.

“You have been my fans and always made me better in this field of Journalism. Time has now come for me to leave KTN News,” she said.

Mwaka and Matambo are expected to enhance the Kiswahili section currently steered by Salim Swaleh as NTV moves to enhance its news team ahead of the 2022 general elections.

The other NTV Swahili anchors/reporters include Kaltum Juma and Nuru Abdulaziz.

This is the first time the station is making major hires for the Kiswahili section since July 2018 when it unveiled the new cast of presenters.

Additionally two other high profile KTN News anchors were in talks to join the station; Ben Kitili and Lindah Ogutu, according to insiders who told Viral Tea nearly two weeks ago.

The developments signal a renewed battle for journalists and presenters in the media as the industry prepares itself for the intense coverage involved in the General elections. More movements are expected in the coming months, with NTV, Citizen TV, BBC among others, armed with huge budgets, expected to lead the way in the hunt for stellar talent from their rivals.

Nation Media Group, whose Thursday, April 29 announcement of a 94.4% drop in net profit to just Ksh48 million for the year ended December 31, 2020 shocked many in the media industry, is depending on fresh talent to boost its TV fortunes.

Citizen, being the leading TV station in terms of audience and advertising, is also likely to hunt for more presenters to enhance election coverage.

Likely victims of the mass poaching will be KTN, KBC and new entries in the market such as Ebru TV, Switch TV and TV47.
