NTV's Fridah Mwaka Responds After Outfit Stirs Kenyans On Air
The outfit, a matching blue and yellow jumpsuit that she rocked for her Wednesday bulletin caused a stir among Kenyans, a majority of them moving to label the outfit as inappropriate
NTV news anchor Fridah Mwaka responded to a section of Kenyans who took to social media on Wednesday, June 2 to criticise her outfit while presenting the Swahili news bulletin.
The outfit, a matching blue and yellow jumpsuit that she rocked for her Wednesday bulletin caused a stir among Kenyans, a majority of them moving to label the outfit as inappropriate, beginning with blogger Robert Alai.
Many of them thought the outfit was too casual for the 7pm news while others criticised Alai for his dirty comments on Facebook.
"Unfortunately your eyes have X-ray. Imagine seeing through those clothes to see a naked lady. Let me not even think about what you did on those grounds," noted Collins Kiberenge.

"Dirty mind! What if it was your daughter?" weighed in Seacy Werginger.
After the bulletin, Mwaka responded to the denigrating comments with a Swahili phrase that was the basis of a subtle clapback.
“Watasema mchana; Usiku watalala. (They will badmouth you in the day but they will be quiet and sleep at night)," she posted, in the company of a selfie she took after the live bulletin.
News anchors are under constant pressure over their appearance due to the nature of their job and having to appear on camera on national TV stations in front of millions of pairs of eyes. They therefore go out of their way to impress audiences with fashion that borders between showstopping and professional.
Mwaka is considered as one of the most fashionable anchors in Kenya, known for her custom-tailored professional outfits for news bulletins. In an interview on Friday, April 30, she disclosed that she was a fashion designer with her own clothing line.
"I learnt to tailor from my mother who taught me how to be self-dependent. After Campus, I set up the House of Kichuna and that's where I make the outfits I wear on-air," she revealed.
The former KTN anchor added that she also got a liking to making her own clothes after not easily accessing outfits she liked from stores.
While anchoring news at KTN, Mwaka showcased a variety of stylish outfits and even her colleagues including Lofty Matambo and Zubeida Kananu Koome.
She also disclosed that it was through Matambo that she landed a job as a news anchor at KTN.
"He helped me prepare for the auditions of the show, "The Presenter". He helped me in making voice-overs where he would send me scripts to read on my way to the interview.
"As it turns out, one of the scripts he had me do was what I presented before the panel and that is what got me through to the show," she revealed.
The two went on to become good friends and even released a song together in 2020 on the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic on the country. The song, she explained was meant to give hope to Kenyans, that life would go back to normal.
The duo moved from KTN to the Nation Media Group station and now co-host the 7 pm bulletin.
