Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly (MCA) Robert Alai has alleged that a Cabinet Secretary (CS) in President William Ruto's administration is trying to sell off Nairobi's iconic Hilton Hotel to the county government.

Taking to Twitter on Monday, January 2, Alai revealed that the 53-year-old hotel which finally shut its doors on December 31, 2022, was built on land meant to host a light rail station in the city.

He recommended that the hotel be donated to the county government, and revealed plans to sell it off at Ksh1.7 billion, but did not disclose the name of the CS spearheading the sale.

"Hilton Hotel was built on land where the Nairobi light rail station was to be built. Hilton Hotel should be donated to Nairobi County. They have recovered the proceeds of corruption from it.

"A Kenya Kwanza CS is trying to sell it to Nairobi County at Ksh 1.7 billion," he wrote.

On March 18, 2020, Alai called upon the former Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) under Lieutenant General Mohamed Badi to have Hilton and other hotels such as Intercontinental Hotel which also closed down, brought down because they were built on land meant for the government.

"If serious, this Maj. General should first bring down Hilton Hotel, InterCon and Travel House which are all built on grabbed government lands.

"The light rail station was supposed to be where Hilton Hotel is. The Jomo Kenyatta family grabbed the land," he wrote.

The government holds its stake in the Hilton CBD through the Kenya Development Corporation. It also has a 40.57 per cent shareholding in International Hotels Kenya Ltd, which owns the Hilton.

It also held a 33.83 per cent stake in Kenya Hotel Properties Ltd, the operator of the InterContinental Hotel, which shut down in August 2020, among several top hotels including Laico Regency stopped operations owing to the coronavirus economic fallout.

The State has been accused of failing to fund the operations of the two luxury hotels which has seen other shareholders hold back. The closure of the Hilton Hotel CBD was attributed to declining business in the city.

Regardless of whatever entity takes over the building, on some level, this will always be Hilton for many city residents. It was a meeting point for some and a geographical reference point for others, and will likely remain so for years to come.

The Hilton Nairobi was a pioneer in the hospitality industry having set the standards for hospitality in the city. The hotel was the first of its kind in Kenya to sponsor the renowned Safari Rally driver Patrick Njiru.

Having conducted its extensive Ksh1.36 billion renovation, the facility was also the first property in the capital to introduce the executive lounge concept for its VIP guests in 1994.

It had 287 rooms - 45 twins, 185 doubles, seven suites, 22 pool rooms and 27 executive rooms. It also played host to various international celebrities over the years such as Sydney Poitier, Angelina Jolie and musician Sean Paul as well as Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah.
