Ruto Takes Aim At Ksh300 Billion SGR Project

Deputy President William Ruto launched a direct assault on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project, terming it as one that ruined the lives of the people of the Coastal region.

He spoke while officially welcoming Kilifi Governor and Pamoja Africa Alliance party leader Amason Jeffa Kingi to the Kenya Kwanza coalition, raiding the opposing Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition again.

In a press conference on Tuesday, May 10, Ruto disclosed that the government did not intend on building the SGR at over Ksh300 billion to pauperize the Coast people.

He added that a section of individuals had taken advantage of the project to turn it into programs that were beneficial only to themselves at the expense of the people of the region.

“It was never the intention of the government of Kenya to build the SGR so that the Coast people can be impoverished. A few people took the project hostage and ended up with selfish programs that benefit a few people to the detriment of the entire population of the coast people,” he addressed.

Ruto promised that he would overturn the fortunes of the Mombasa residents and make the project one that greatly helps them.

“We have made a commitment to reverse what has become the biggest impoverishment of the people of Mombasa and the coast entirely,” he added.

Ruto then clarified that his Kenya Kwanza Alliance was committed to honest dealings and that the dealings in Azimio had involved a lot of force and secrecy.

“There is nothing we have in common with the people on the other side. The other side uses force, here we use respect.

“They are deep in secrecy, deceit and conmanship. We are an open, transparent coalition of democrats,” he noted.

Alfred Mutua Joins Ruto…But…

Kingi’s entry comes after Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua hinted on Monday, May 9 that he was considering pulling his PAA party out of the Azimio coalition.

He broke the agreement he had with Raila’s coalition, exposing a number of ailings that have threatened to destabilise it from within.

“To this end, we have decided to break our ties with Azimio la Umoja. Therefore the contract between Azimio and MCC is null and void.”

“We cannot continue to be in a country of a few millionaires. Kenyans want jobs, more money and the right leadership. I am aware that five other parties are about to leave due to its exclusiveness and zoning terms.”

“I will campaign for William Ruto. He is a good man and I believe he will make a change as he becomes the next leader of this country,” he addressed.

However, the political Parties Dispute Tribunal has now thrown out an application by Maendeleo Chap Chap seeking to exit the Azimio Coalition, noting that they should have sought internal alternative dispute resolution mechanisms before heading to the tribunal.
