Ruto Urges Parliament To Drop Matiang'i Summons In Security Saga

Deputy President William Ruto has called upon the Members of Parliament to forgo the summons issued to Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i over the saga that saw the DP's security downgraded.

While sharing a headline cover of the People Daily on Tuesday, August 31 on his social media pages, DP Ruto called the summons a waste of time and not an issue.

Ruto affirmed that the officers from the Administration Police (AP) assigned to him are professional and not a downgrade as initially reported.

He added that parliament should focus on more pressing issues such as security to be deployed in situations such as the increase in banditry attacks.

"Parliamentary time should not be wasted on non-issues. The AP is a professional security service and those who think it's a downgrade are wrong. Parliament should instead focus on deployment to serious situations in areas where bandits are causing mayhem and destruction," Ruto stated.

CS Matiang'i was summoned to appear before Parliament on Wednesday, September 1 following the surprise change in Ruto's security detail.

Security Committee Chairman, Peter Mwathi, stated that Matiang'i was summoned to explain the changes while in the company of Interior Principal Secretary, Karanja Kibicho, and Inspector General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai.

Mwathi added that the summons will be for purposes of establishing the chain of events and procedures observed before the swap in the DP's security from his elite-ranked General Service Unit (GSU) officers to his AP officers.

“We want them to shed light on whether the action they took is within the law, and if not, we will have no option but to ensure that the law is followed,” noted Mwathi.

Ruto was however unperturbed by the changes and showed exactly how when he shared a cup of tea with the new security team at his official residence in Karen on Monday, August 30.
