Shirleen Mukami Responds To Being Accused Of Conning Kenyans Ksh848K

The informant unearthed to Obare how a man named as Kenneth Kabuga Gachie, alias Cabu Gah, who was known to many as a popular blogger, was believed to have crafted the whole scheme that saw her write an expertly-crafted Twitter thread that moved Kenyans to emotions.

20-year-old single mother Shirleen Mukami was forced to defend herself immediately accusations went viral that the funds drive she was running turned out to be an online fraud scheme ideated by her alleged boyfriend.

A weekend after she hit the Ksh625,000 contribution mark through her ‘Baby Shower Sisters’ initiative, screenshots exposed by blogger Edgar Obare on Monday, November 15 showed a conversation with an informant alleging that Mukami had collaborated with her teenage lover to fool Kenyans.

They responded by contributing in kind, managing to raise over Ksh848,000 in a space of three days to support the neglected young mother.

The furore that emerged from the screenshots forced her to issue a statement on her Twitter account moments later, dismissing the screenshots and terming her pleas and her initiative as legitimate.

Mukami also stated that she reached out to Gachie to help spread the initiative nationwide owing to his successful online campaigns and the fame he amassed as the popular blogger.

“I, a single mom, approached Kenneth Gachie to help me popularise my initiative. As stated here already, he has been good at that and successfully did a campaign for his sister last year to buy an electric wheelchair and make donations to spinal injury victims.”

“I’ve known Kenneth to be good with social media and believed he would help popularize my initiative and he did,” she stated.

“I’ve called him about the chats with his boys and he said they were simply idle chats that he and his boys normally have. I feel terrible about the chats and how they have affected what I thought was going to be my biggest break.”

Mukami added that she had to part ways with Gachie to run the initiative all by herself alongside her friends.

“I founded this campaign with Phoebe and Stella and we shall together address the matter fully in the video. We have contacted a lawyer who shall now move with us and we try to resolve these matters.”

Mukami set the record straight by affirming that the funds that were contributed to the initiative have not been withdrawn

“And for the record, none of the funds have so far been withdrawn. All the funds are still with Mchanga and we shall be advised on what to do with them.”

The initiative has seen them visit five mothers so far, some as young as 19 years old. Mukami had revealed that a friend of hers recommended that she share her story nationwide after seeking donations from a section of friends and relatives.

The story drew the attention of Kenyans from Narc Kenya Party leader, Martha Karua to media houses, prominent personalities among others, with her tweet being retweeted above 12,000 times and liked over 38,700 times as of Saturday, November 13.

“Congrats for sharing and reaching out to others. Your courage & strength is a blessing to others and you deserve all the support. Keep going and you will achieve great things in life as you raise your lovely baby,” she replied.
