The eight were believed to be behind a spate of attacks in the country, with one of them being linked to the January 15 and 16, 2019 Dusit D2 terror attack which left 21 people dead.

They added that the suspects were highly trained, armed and dangerous and have been dispatched to the country to commit acts of terror.

Abdurahman was named among the DCI’s most wanted that included Mohamed Ali Hussein, Ahmed Ali Mohamed, Eric Njoroge Wachira aka Mohamed Njoroge, Abdikadir Mohamed Abdikadir, Peter Gichungu Njoroge, Mohamud Abdi Aden and Kassim Musa Mwarusi.

Abdurahman was part of a criminal gang that used to terrorise residents of Nyeri town before escaping to Somalia. He joined Al Shabaab in 2016 and after undergoing training and fighting in Somalia, he was dispatched to the country to carry out attacks.

Also named was Mohamed Ali Hussein, who was part of a planned Al Shabaab attack in 2018 which was foiled. He alongside Ahmed Ali was reported to have been deployed to carry out an attack using a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED).

However, their plan was disrupted after security personnel intercepted the VBIED and arrested three militants at Metri area in Isiolo County. They managed to escape and return to Somalia.

Eric Njoroge Wachira was part of a gang that was involved in acts of armed robberies within Mukuruweini and Karatina sub-counties before joining the Al Shabaab in 2016. He was born on August 27, 1991, in Nyeri County.

Abdikadir Mohamed was born in Somalia and is also connected to Al-Qaeda militants in Yemen. He was a close ally to Al Shabaab leaders Fazul Abdullah Mohamed, Abdi Godane and Salim Saleh Swaleh Nabhan.

He was involved in the planning of the Dusit D2 attack and Kampala, Uganda bombings in 2010. He once lived in the South C estate in Nairobi and Kongowea/Nyali in Mombasa County.

Peter Gichungu Njoroge holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and was arrested in Mandera town prior to joining Al Shabaab on July 6, 2016. He was prosecuted and later released on March 6, 2020, but travelled to Somalia to join the militia group after a short stay in Kenya, in the company of his girlfriend from the Bamburi area, Mombasa County.

Mohamud Abdi Aden from Garissa County was first arrested in April 2014 for providing intel to the Al Shabaab on possible targets the group could attack in the country. He was prosecuted and charged in court with the collection of information contrary to sections 29 and 30 of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) but was released on March 31, 2017, and proceeded to join Al Shabaab in Somalia. He was also part of the cell that planned the Dusit attack.

Kassim Musa Mwarusi from Ukunda was a member of a criminal group operating in the South Coast region. He is suspected to be frequently visiting Likoni, Diani and Ukunda towns and other areas as well as being part of the radicalisation of unsuspecting youth in the said areas.
