Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai upset the odds by clinching gold in the 3000m steeplechase final in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Chemutai produced an outstanding performance to out-sprint Courtney Frerichs of the United States, with Kenya’s Hvyin Kiyeng settling for bronze in the race.

Chemutai finished fourth in the 2019 World Championships that was dominated by Kenya’s Beatrice Chepkoech, the world record holder and world champion, who struggled in the race in Tokyo.

Kenya’s wait for the elusive gold medal continues, despite having a total of three medals in the competition. In the men’s version of the same race, Benjamin Kigen bagged the country’s first medal, though a bronze medal on Monday, August 2 after clocking 8:11:45 to finish third in the race won by Moroccan, Soufiane El Bakkali.

The Moroccan had beaten Ethiopian Girma Lamecha in the final lap to bag the gold medal. Ethiopia won Silver.

It was the first time since 1984 that Kenya has lost a race that has been making them famous in the athletics scene over the years.

Hellen Obiri had to settle for second place as Netherlands’ Sifa Hassan stormed to victory in the 5,000m race.

Obiri’s hopes of adding another gold medal to her trophy cabinet were dented by Hassan on Monday, but she did pick up Kenya’s second medal in the competition.

She was no match for Hassan’s spirited battle to the finish as she settled for silver in 14:38.36, the same color of medal she clinched five years ago in Rio de Janeiro. Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay settled for bronze.
