Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has spoken out after reports had earlier claimed that Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives arrested Kanyenyaini Member of County Assembly (MCA) Grace Nduta, popularly known as “City."

This is after Nduta was reported to have been arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in relation to the 'staged' abduction of Juja Member of Parliament (MP) George Koimburi, which police have labelled as a politically driven scheme.

Taking to X, Governor Kang'ata in a statement, however, claimed that he visited the police station where Nduta was reportedly taken to and held, only to find that she was not there.

He vowed that his administration would work on tracing her. As his post showed proof that she may have been 'abducted', Kang'ata underlined the seriousness of the matter for the sake of Nduta's children.

“Hon City MCA Kanyenyaini Kangema has been picked up by unknown persons. Unconfirmed reports had suggested she is in the Samuru Police Post, Gatanga. I have visited the post to no avail. The county will endeavour to trace her, particularly because of her beloved children,” said Kang’ata.

She was taken into custody a day after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced they had found a private vehicle—believed to have been used in the abduction—a Subaru Forester, on Tuesday in Juja Township.

The vehicle is registered to someone identified as a close political associate of the MP and a former UDA agent during the 2022 elections.

According to police, the suspect's car allegedly obstructed the MP's vehicle just before the staged abduction took place. Investigators are also tracking down a motorcycle thought to have been used to move the MP from a nearby house to the coffee plantation in Kiambu County, where he was eventually discovered.

“This is a major breakthrough in the investigation,” said Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga. “The Subaru was identified as the vehicle used to obstruct Koimburi’s car before his alleged abduction.”

Koimburi was allegedly abducted on Sunday outside a church in Mugutha, Kiambu County, and found the following morning abandoned in a coffee plantation. However, police declared that the incident was faked.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja dismissed the abduction claims, calling the entire episode “political theatrics.” He said officers who responded to the reported scene found no evidence of a struggle or kidnapping.

“The video circulating online does not match the terrain and road conditions of the supposed location,” Kanja said, also pointing out that Moses Kariuki, the caretaker of the farm where Koimburi was discovered, denied seeing anything unusual.

Koimburi was later taken to Karen Hospital in Nairobi, where he is still admitted. Despite visits from various individuals, police claim he has refused to give a statement or cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

IG Kanja also questioned how Koimburi’s associates were able to locate him so quickly and noted that he arrived at the hospital in his vehicle, further fueling doubts about the authenticity of the abduction.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the motives behind the staged event, with additional arrests reportedly anticipated.
