You are more likely to pay a bribe in Elgeyo Marakwet County while seeking a service, more than anywhere else in Kenya.
This is according to a new report released by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) titled National Ethics and Corruption Survey 2024 released on Tuesday, August 5, which revealed the prevalence of bribe payment across the 47 counties.

"Elgeyo-Marakwet, Marsabit and Wajir were counties where bribery was most prevalent with all (100%) respondents who sought services in these counties paying a bribe," the report read in part.
Following the top three was Murang’a with a 94.9 percent prevalence, the only county in the Central region of Kenya in the top five. This is given that following the county was Mandera at 86.9 percent.
Turkana follows in sixth at 86.5 per cent, Kilifi in seventh at 85.3 per cent and Laikipia at 83.7 per cent. Rounding off the top 10 was West Pokot (82.1 per cent) and Isiolo (81.3 per cent).
The data is in contrast to counties where Kenyans would be safe in terms of seeking county services without having to worry about paying bribes, indicating the difference in corruption levels in all the 47 counties.
For instance, in Makueni County, one is 34.9 per cent likely to pay a bribe, followed by Nyandarua (40.7 per cent), Kajiado (41.2 per cent), Bomet (42.8 per cent) and Narok (44.6 per cent).
Meanwhile, the report also captured the amounts in Kenya Shillings counties paid in bribes. Uasin Gishu County recorded the highest average bribe payments in Kenya, with residents paying an average of Ksh25,873.
Baringo came second, with an average of Ksh16,156 in bribes. Other counties with high average bribe amounts included Embu at Ksh12,878, Homa Bay at Ksh12,381, and Bomet at Ksh11,650—underscoring the widespread nature of corruption across various regions.
"On average, counties where respondents paid the largest amount of bribes were Uasin-Gishu (Ksh 25,873), followed by Baringo (Ksh 16,156), Embu (Ksh 12,878), Homabay (Ksh 12,381), Bomet (Ksh 11,650), Kakamega (Ksh 10,013), Tana-River (Ksh 9,582), Kiambu (Ksh 7,982), Nyamira (Ksh 7,748), and Wajir (Ksh 7,275) counties," the report noted.
