Two allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have been abducted, a day after the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mohamed Amin, warned that he could be arrested.

The first is Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) National Youth Leader, Wanjiku Thiga, who took to X on Tuesday, July 1, to report that unknown individuals had abducted her.

“I have been abducted at Kamakis,” Wanjiku stated. Amidst concerns raised amongst her party members and supporters, the details surrounding the abduction remain unclear.

Kamakis happens to be a popular stopover along both Thika Road and the Eastern Bypass, with questions raised on how such a brazen act could occur amidst high human traffic.

The DCP has not yet released an official statement, but party insiders say the issue is being handled as a priority. “My friend Wanjiku Thiga has been taken along Kamakis by unknown individuals. This has become too much !!!” X user Jay Wes stated.

Wanjiku, who has lately been outspoken on political and national issues, was abducted — an incident that has heightened concerns about the safety of young, politically engaged leaders in the country.

Beforehand, she was raising awareness on X about her colleague, Peter Kawanjiru, also an ally of Gachagua, whose family claimed officers from the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) forcibly took their relative on Monday night, June 30.

The family says that officers in plain clothes raided their home in Limuru around 8:30 pm, breaking down doors and ransacking the place while insisting on arresting the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) youth leader.

Eyewitnesses and relatives recounted that more than 10 vehicles arrived in the area, after which a sudden power outage occurred, followed by loud bangs, gunfire, and chaos.

“They said they were from DCI Kiambu Road and were looking for someone named Kawanjiru. When we refused to open, they started hitting the door with metal rods,” a family member narrated.

The family also alleged that the officers neither showed a warrant nor gave any explanation for the raid. “I asked them, ‘Has he killed someone? Has he stolen?’ but they said, ‘We’re just doing the job we were sent to do,’” the family member added.

Kawanjiru, an ally of Gachagua, has been outspoken in criticising the Kenya Kwanza administration and pushing the “Wan tam” slogans opposing the government.

In an interview with NTV, the family said the situation turned even more tense when the officers allegedly fired live bullets into the air, scattering the crowd. The standoff reportedly dragged on for more than four hours.

Since then, Kawanjiru has disappeared, and the family has been unable to locate him. Despite checking various police stations in both Kiambu and Nairobi, no one has confirmed holding him or offered any details about his whereabouts.

On Monday, Amin was pressed on whether Gachagua could be prosecuted if linked to the unrest. Amin made it clear that nobody is above the law, and if the former Deputy President is found connected to the violence that broke out on Wednesday, he will be fully prosecuted.
