A video seen by Viral Tea showed the final moments before a matatu bus was set ablaze by protesters along Ngong Road on Tuesday, May 2.

In the 30-second clip, the goons could be seen surrounding the bus from all corners, pelting stones at it as well as robbing the passengers who were on the bus.

As the passengers escaped, one of them fell prey to the marauding goons who proceeded to rob him of his valuables.

Another video showed smoke coming from the matatu, with a further close-up revealing that it was reduced to a charred shell.

Police reportedly lobbed teargas at the protesters on the road even as images had shown that the road was deserted.

Azimio la Umoja coalition, which is staging mass demonstrations in Nairobi as of now, denounced themselves from claims that their supporters were responsible for burning the bus down.

"Kindly also publish a single photo or video of those who set that minibus ablaze?" Azimio replied to a tweet claiming the bus was burnt by the coalition's protesters.

Azimio had on Monday, May 1 announced that the protests would commence from 6 am on Tuesday, May 2 in various parts of Kenya, with the epicentre being Nairobi City.

However, there was little activity at the time in the capital as the Central Business District enjoyed a rare calmness during morning hours, with fewer police officers on patrol as businesses opened.

Anti-riot police officers were deployed strategically in Nairobi CBD ahead of Raila-led Azimio protests to petition key institutions. The anti-government demonstrations often start in the afternoon after careful calculation of routes and evading police barricades by the Azimio outfit.

A contingent of police officers mounted roadblocks around the State House, Nairobi as well as carried out inspections of the vehicles which were using the roads.

Demonstrations were however reported around Imara Daima Estate, off Mombasa Road and a number of roads around Kisumu City, as businesses that were opened earlier were closed as a precautionary measure ahead of the peak of the protests. Other protesters lit bonfires in Kibra during their clash with anti-riot police officers.

Azimio leader, Raila Odinga had on May 1 assured President William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that his supporters would not go near the residential areas of Nairobi during the Tuesday, May 2 protests.

"We assure Mr Ruto and Mr Gachagua that there will be no destruction of people's properties, our people have been told to be peaceful, they're not even going to go to where people's places are, we are not going to markets, shops.

"We have said that we are going to assemble at Central Park in the city of Nairobi and march to the IEBC headquarters and present a petition there, march to the Office of the President along Uhuru Highway and present a petition, and also go to the Treasury buildings, there are no businesses along those streets, so therefore, nobody should come up with excuses that they're going to protect people's property tomorrow," he stated.
