The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of Nairobi-based businessman, Kakan Maiyo, hours after plain clothes officers pounced on him on Wednesday evening, July 9, in the Central Business District (CBD).

In a statement released in the wee hours of Thursday morning, July 10, the investigative agency claimed he was inciting violence against police officers and their families, referenced by a viral video on his TikTok account.

DCI added that in response, detectives tracked him down to Kimathi House in Nairobi, where he was operating a business he founded known as Leta Peleka.

"Godfrey Mwasiaga Kakan Maiyo, the suspect behind a viral video inciting violence against police officers and their families, has been arrested," the statement read in part.

"The video had been uploaded to his TikTok account. Detectives trailed the suspect to Kimathi House, where he was operating a discreet office under the name LetaPeleka Logistics."

The DCI reported that Maiyo was arrested following intensive surveillance and is now in custody as investigations proceed, with plans to charge him in court.

The investigative agency referenced a screengrab of a video clip on his TikTok, which was captioned "mulika polisi/DCI", accompanied with a sub-caption "Enough is Enough #HalfTAM".

However, Viral Tea conducted independent spot checks on his TikTok page, which had over 24,900 followers, and could not find the video clip in question, suggesting that it may have been deleted before he was arrested. However, we did find a video clip regarding his message to DCI, questioning the recent abductions targeting young people across the country, which was posted on July 1. Here it is below:

DCI's statement came after Viral Tea first broke the news that Maiyo was picked up from his office by the plainclothes officers who arrived in two Subarus. A video clip of the arrest showed the officers manhandling Maiyo, who could be heard lamenting why they were forcing him out of his office.

The officers were alleged to have stated that they were taking him to the Capitol Hill Police Station, but his lawyer, David, who spoke to us, said he wound up at the DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road after it turned out that he was not booked at the station.

"I was called by one of his employees who informed me that two guys in two Subarus came for him at his office in Kimathi House. They told his employees that they're taking him to the Capitol Hill police station."

"We went there, but he was not booked in that station. We went to the Nairobi Area, and he was also not there. Later, we were informed that he was taken to DCI headquarters," he disclosed.

Maiyo has been vocal on his social media handles, criticising the government and the police over recent developments that have placed intense scrutiny on the men and women of law enforcement, including the death of teacher Albert Ojwang, which sparked nationwide protests.

Earlier on July 9, President William Ruto stated that anyone who attacked a police officer or invaded a police station in the country was declaring war.

"Anyone who attacks a police officer or a police station will face the full force of the law. This is a declaration of war against lawlessness. I will not hesitate to protect the lives and property of our citizens," he said while addressing officers during the launch of the Police Housing Project at Kilimani Police Station in Nairobi.
