Gachagua Calls For ICC Intervention Over Govt Sponsoring Mungiki Activities
Gachagua claimed that the criminal gang has been reigning terror in the Mount Kenya region and has been regrouped by the government to cause mayhem.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Sunday, January 5 instructed Members of Parliament (MP) allied to him to assemble a team of lawyers who will write to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to initiate an investigation against the government over the alleged use of the outlawed Mungiki faction.
Speaking during a church service at Guardian Angel Tetu Catholic Church in Nyeri County, Gachagua claimed that the criminal gang has been reigning terror in the Mount Kenya region and has been regrouped by the government to cause mayhem.
He further accused the government through Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, of covertly sponsoring the outlawed group with the intent to cause havoc among the people of Mt Kenya.
Whereas Gachagua did not mention names, he referred to the December 31 political rally, led by the controversial pastor and political leader Maina Njenga. During the meeting, Njenga, who has in the past been linked with Mungiki, revealed that he will be taking on Gachagua head-on.

This announcement has triggered Gachagua, who, in response, unleashed a scathing critique of the government while pointing to the past incidents involving the outlaw group.
"In the late 80s during the reign of President Moi, the government destroyed the economy and became very intolerant and dictatorial. When the people of this region started saying no a criminal gang was formed to come and punish the people," Gachagua claimed.
"This gang is known to have committed crimes against humanity. Now with the sponsorship of the government, they have come back and for sure they have started."
The ousted DP went on to narrate how the gang, in 2009, allegedly invaded a village in Nyeri County and butchered 29 people before raping women and committing other crimes, and it took the intervention of the then Interior Minister the late John Michuki to neutralize their existence.
"The ICC should not wait until crimes against humanity have been committed. This gang is known to have committed crimes against humanity," Gachagua asserted, adding "Why can't the police instead of giving protection to that criminal gang as directed by the Deputy President deal with the alcohol issue?"
Gachagua therefore instructed his allies, led by Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia to demand a probe by the ICC and bring to book the perpetrators.
"Hon Kaguchia, you must get a team and document all the crimes that were committed by that team of outlawed sects in the 1990s because those were crimes against humanity and start engaging the ICC," he directed.
The former Deputy President further alleged that after the political rally on December 31st, residents were robbed and harassed. Viral Tea could not independently verify the claims.
Gachagua's sentiments could further intensify political flames within his home Mt Kenya region and spread across the ruling class in the country. 2025 is likely to be a definitive year for the politics of the vote-rich region with two years to the 2027 general elections.
On Friday, January 3, Gachagua spoke regarding his major political announcement which he had promised on November 24, 2024, that he would make in January this year, revealing that he would give political directions for the Mt Kenya region at the end of the month, promising that the region would not be deceived by the Kenya Kwanza government as they were during the first two years of the first term.
"I will announce at the end of January. I have listened to the elders, members of the church, business people and professionals and I’ll continue to listen to the ground. We will give a direction for the people of the Mt Kenya region on how we will live in this country so that next time, we do not find ourselves in the hole that we’ve been put into," he promised.
