“The Presidential Transitional Council (PTC) extends its deepest condolences to the government and people of Kenya, as well as to the family of Bénédict Kabiru, who fell on Monday, 24 March 2025, in Savien while carrying out his mission,” read part of the statement by the PTC.
“This valiant police officer, engaged alongside Haitian forces in the fight against insecurity, made the ultimate sacrifice for a better future for our country. His bravery and commitment will never be forgotten."
Speaking to the press, the Haitian president vowed to track down the armed criminals responsible for Kabiru’s death and ensure they are brought to justice.
Kabiru’s death was first reported on Tuesday, March 25, after Haitian local media revealed that he had been killed during a confrontation with gang members.
During the attack, three armored vehicles belonging to the peacekeepers were set ablaze by the gangs. Footage circulating online showed the vehicles engulfed in flames.
Confirming the incident, Kenyan Police Spokesperson in Haiti, Jack Ombaka, stated that the attack occurred after the vehicles became stuck in a ditch, which is suspected to have been deliberately dug by the gangs.
In response, two Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles from Pont-Sonde, central Haiti, were dispatched to aid in the recovery. However, during the operation, the gangs ambushed the officers and took off with Kabiru’s body.
According to the Kenyan National Police Service (NPS), specialized teams have since been deployed to locate and retrieve Kabiru’s remains, which are still believed to be in gang custody.
