Government pathologist Johansen Oduor has confirmed that slain lawyer Kyalo Mbobu died from massive blood loss and extensive injuries after being shot eight times.

Addressing the media on Thursday, September 11, after conducting a postmortem, Oduor outlined the cause of death in a case that has gripped national attention.

He added that two bullets were retrieved from Mbobu’s body, including one from his left arm, even as police had earlier disclosed that several spent cartridges were unaccounted for from his vehicle.

Further, Oduor explained that the bullets caused heavy bleeding by damaging neck vessels and also resulted in a spinal injury, though the chest cavity was not affected.

He noted that gunpowder burns on the skin showed the shots were fired from close range, confirming a well-executed assassination mission by Mbobu's attackers.

"Upon having examined the body, we found that Wakili was shot a total of eight times. And with most of the gunshot coming from the right side of the body, we were able to recover two bullets, which are being given to the investigative officer for ballistic purposes," Oduor disclosed.

"There was a lot of bleeding because there was an injury to the neck vessels. There was also injury to the spine. So these injuries were severe enough to cause death."

Mbobu was gunned down by unidentified attackers in a drive-by shooting on Tuesday, September 9, while driving home along Magadi Road near the Galleria Brookside area in Karen.

According to a police report issued after the incident, investigators recovered three spent cartridges, with initial findings showing that Mbobu was shot five times in the head, leading to his instant death.

Additionally, police said they have obtained crucial CCTV footage from several locations, including private buildings, tracking the final movements of Mbobu.

The footage showed Mbobu leaving his city office on Tuesday morning and arriving at Sagret Hotel along Milimani Road at 11:05 a.m., where he held a three-hour meeting with individuals who have since been considered persons of interest. Receipts and camera timestamps confirmed they shared a lunch costing Ksh 3,800.

At 1:45 p.m., Mbobu left the hotel and returned to his office. Investigators are also analysing his phone records for possible leads.

Later that evening, at 5:09 p.m., he left Chester House and drove through Wabera Street, City Hall Way, Parliament Road, Uhuru Highway, and Nyayo Roundabout before branching onto Lang’ata Road and eventually Magadi Road.

It was along Magadi Road, just minutes from his Boyani home in Karen, that the attackers—who had reportedly been trailing him—struck. Detectives believe the killers chose this spot deliberately, knowing traffic naturally slows at the diversion, creating the perfect ambush point.

Eyewitnesses described hearing the sound of a motorbike moments before gunshots rang out. One witness revealed that they initially thought it was an attempted robbery, only to realise Mbobu had been shot. The assailants, wearing masks and helmets, fled on motorbikes toward the Galleria Mall area.

Despite the precision of the attack, police confirmed that nothing was stolen from the scene, leaving the motive behind the killing still unclear.

The brazen shooting has sparked uproar within the legal fraternity, with the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) announcing protests in the form of a Purple Ribbon March set for Friday, September 12, to protest rising violence targeting members of the legal fraternity.
