President William Ruto on Tuesday, December 6 appointed 20 new judges to the High Court.

In a Gazette notice sent to newsrooms, the Head of State approved all the names that were recommended to him by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). 

"In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 166 (1) (b) of the Constitution of Kenya, I. William Samoei Ruto, President, and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, appoint (the following) to be Judges of the High Court of the Republic of Kenya," read the notice in part.

They include:

  2. Mongare Josephine Wayua Wambua
  3. Nyaundi Patricia Mande, SC
  4. Kavedza Diana Rachel
  5. Chirchir Sophie Chebet
  6. Sifuna Nixon Wanyama (Prof. Dr.)
  7. Shariff Mwanaisha Saida
  8. Nyaga Heston Mbogo
  9. Chigiti John Mugwimi
  10. Mulwa Peter Mutua.
  11. Nthiga Lawrence Mugambi
  12. Mutai Gregory
  13. Wananda John Robert Anuro
  14. Mohochi Samwel Mukira.
  15. Olel Francis Rayola Ochieng Odhiambo
  16. Githiru Freda Mugambi (Dr.)

The list of 20 magistrates was arrived at upon the conclusion of the process of evaluation of the various applicants interviewed for the vacancies.

The position of the Judges of the High Court was advertised on March 14, 2022, by the JSC.

"After lengthy deliberations and careful consideration of the performance of the various candidates and based on the constitutional imperative of merit, gender, regional balance and affirmative action, the JSC has recommended the appointment of the underlisted to the Office of Judge of the High Court," read the statement signed by Chief Justice Martha Koome. 

Following the appointment by the President, the judges will be expected to address the shortage of labour in terms of dealing with the hearing and determination of cases.

Shortly after President Ruto was sworn in on Tuesday, September 13, he appointed the six Court of Appeal judges who were nominated during the regime of former president Uhuru Kenyatta.

He signed two gazette notices that confirmed the appointment of four Court of Appeal judges and two Environment and Land Court judges.

The Court of Appeal Judges appointed by President Ruto were Korir Weldon Kipyegon, Muchelule Aggrey Otsyula, Odunga George Vincent and Prof. Joel Mwaura Ngugi, Otsyula, Odunga George Vincent, Joel Mwaura Ngugi.

The two Environment and Land Court judges appointed by the Head of State were Makori Evans Kiago and Cheruiyot Omange Judith Elizabeth.
