The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission on Wednesday, April 17, announced that former Murang'a governor Mwangi wa Iria's wife and brother have been arrested.

The duo were arrested as suspects in the Ksh140 million Murang'a County graft case.

"The wife of former Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria Jane Waigwe Kimani and her brother Solomon Mutura Kimani, both suspects in the Ksh140 million Murang’a County graft case, have been arrested.

"The two are currently before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court for plea-taking. They are the Directors of Value View Ltd, one of the companies used as a conduit in the fraudulent scheme," stated EACC.

EACC reported that it is pursuing the other six suspects, including the former Governor, who failed to honour the summons to appear before it on Wednesday at 8 am.

On Monday, EACC ordered Wa Iria to present himself to the EACC headquarters in Nairobi by Tuesday morning, April 16.

However, the former governor requested the Commission to reschedule for Wednesday, April 17. He was yet to appear at Integrity Centre by the time of publishing this article.

Wa Iria, his wife, and six other suspects were required to appear in person at the Integrity Centre headquarters for processing on Tuesday at 8.00 am without fail.

The anti-graft body claimed that the eight were evading arrest in connection with a procurement fraud investigation totalling Ksh140 million.

Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs and Communication Eric Ngumbi confirmed that EACC directed the former governor to appear alongside the officials.

This came following a decision by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to charge the eight over the procurement fraud irregularities totalling the aforementioned amount. They are accused of irregularly awarding tenders and other procurement irregularities.

DPP Renson Ingonga recommended that Wa Iria and the seven be charged with a conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption in contravention of section 48 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, Abuse of office contrary to section 46 as read with section 48 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, and Unlawful acquisition of public property against section 45 (1) (a) as read with section 48 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act.

Reports indicated that EACC detectives had planned to nab him hours after ODPP's statement in Mumias where he was attending a function with other Azimio leaders, only for Wa Iria to learn of the plans.

With this alleged intelligence, the former governor failed to disembark from the chopper, thus avoiding arrest which would have forced him to spend a night in custody.
