The Nation Media Group (NMG) has announced that it will adjust the prices of the Business Daily newspaper and its ePaper version upwards from May 20, 2024.

In a public notice, the regional media house revealed that the move was informed by the changing dynamics in the market that had affected its publication process.

"As you are all aware, The Business Daily has grown over the years to become the leading business newspaper in Kenya. We pride ourselves in offering exclusive business content and data insights, with a commitment to delivering value, credibility, and innovative solutions," read the notice in part.

"As we grow, market dynamics keep changing, affecting our production processes-primarily cost of production."

This means that loyal readers of Kenya’s only business/economics newspaper will have to part with Ksh100 per hard copy from Monday, May 20, an increase from Ksh60 as has been the case. For those purchasing the ePaper, they will have to pay Ksh80, up from Ksh40.

NMG in addition believed that the adjustment is essential in maintaining the excellence of its publication and upholding its dedication to providing invaluable insights to its readers.

Nonetheless, the media house asked Business Daily newspaper readers to continue supporting the enterprise by purchasing the publication, reading and maintaining their subscription to the ePaper.

"The Business Daily is committed to delivering quality content in line with its mandate as the go-to source for insightful business news and analysis.

"We promise to continue being the trusted leader in the business media landscape, providing you with the information you need to make informed decisions in your respective industries," added the statement.

The price adjustment comes as the Business Daily's website was revamped with a new design, with plans to introduce a hybrid paywall in the coming weeks, following the footsteps of its Nation.Africa website.

The paywall – a digital system that allows only readers who have subscribed by paying a certain amount of money to access news articles and stories on a website has been experimented with by various media houses in Kenya since 2021 with mixed success.

While the specifics on what users will be charged to access Business Daily content once the paywall is launched are not yet clear, the model is likely going to be similar to the one being used by Nation.Africa where readers will be allowed to read certain stories for free.

Before the Nation.Africa paywall was shelved in 2022 and revived the following year, it had netted Ksh5 million in terms of subscription fees.

The reintroduction was viewed as a response to the decline in NMG's profits which saw the media house record a 98.8 per cent decline in net profit from Ksh247.8 million in the 2021/2022 financial year to Ksh2.9 million in 2022/2023.
