Police officers from Lunga Lunga Police Station in Kwale conducted a successful raid on a suspected criminal hideout in the Ngeneni area, Lunga Lunga Township, following a credible tip-off from members of the public.

According to a statement released by the National Police Service (NPS) on Saturday, August 2, the operation targeted a group believed to be part of a notorious gang operating in the region.

One of the suspects, considered a key member of the gang, is wanted on an active warrant of arrest for murder and was reportedly spotted in the company of accomplices in the area.

Officers moved swiftly to the location and stormed a single-room dwelling, where they found the suspects armed with machetes and in possession of cannabis sativa, which they were allegedly smoking at the time of the raid.

"A thorough search of the premises led to the recovery of approximately 257 grams of cannabis sativa, five machetes, and a black Tanzanian-registered motorcycle (registration number MC890), suspected to have been used in various criminal activities," NPS stated in part.

The suspects were arrested on site and are currently in police custody pending arraignment. The NPS commended members of the public for their cooperation and timely information, which it says played a critical role in the success of the operation.

Their arrest comes in the wake of a recent wave of violence attributed to the infamous ‘Panga Boys’ gang. In April, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported the arrest of 51 additional suspects believed to be affiliated with the gang, which has been operating in parts of Kwale and Mombasa counties.

The arrests were part of an ongoing security operation in the Coast region, launched in response to growing public concern and pressure from business owners, local leaders, and human rights groups over the surge in gang-related crime.

The suspects were apprehended in several areas within Kisauni Subcounty, including Corner Ya Kisauni, Jocham Hospital, Barisheba, Sunlight, Mwandoni, Junda, Cobra, and Kadongo Grounds.

During the operation, police also impounded five tuk-tuks suspected to have been used in mobile phone thefts.

These arrests followed an earlier crackdown in Diani, Kwale County, where 120 suspected gang members were captured after a week-long operation.
