Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on Wednesday, June 11, promised to stand by the family of teacher and X influencer Albert Ojwang, who was murdered while in police custody.

The county boss met with the family of the late Ojwang, who was revealed to be one of Sakaja’s top influencers, frequently working with his media team. The meeting, held at City Hall, included Albert’s father, mother, his widow, and their three-year-old son.

Governor Sakaja assured the family of his continued support, stating that he would cover all burial expenses, fund the child’s education, and clear the outstanding college fees for Albert’s widow, who is currently pursuing a course in community health.

“I have known Albert for a long time. If you go through his Facebook and Twitter, you will see that he was a personal influencer, and we will walk with his family on this journey.

"We will take care of the burial expenses, educate his three-year-old son George Miles, and finish paying his widow’s college fees. This is important as we call for justice for this young man.” Sakaja confirmed.

He further expressed his joy at Kenyans who turned up to support the family by contributing through a paybill, adding that the family has proposed that all those contributions be channelled to a Money Market Fund that will secure the child's future instead of all being spent on an event.

The City Hall boss further reiterated his commitment to securing a job for the widow upon completion of her studies.

“Upon completing her training as a health worker, we shall ensure she gets a job in the county as she is in her last semester,” Sakaja added.

Expressing his deep sorrow and condolences, the Governor also committed to getting friends together to purchase a plot in Homa Bay and construct rental units for Albert’s parents to help them earn a living.

"We want justice for Albert, true justice. This little boy, George, is oblivious of what has happened to his father, whom he will never see again. We cannot go on this way as a country,” Sakaja added.

Ojwang, a 31-year-old teacher and X influencer, was first reported to have died on Sunday, June 8, 2025, under mysterious circumstances while in police custody at Nairobi's Central Police Station.

The events leading to his death began on Friday, June 6, 2025, when he was arrested in Homa Bay County. His arrest stemmed from a complaint filed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat, who accused Ojwang of tarnishing his name on social media through a post on X.

On Sunday, June 8, 2025, police reported finding him unconscious in a cell, stating he had hit his head against a wall. He was then rushed to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

However, Ojwang's family lawyer refuted the police narrative of suicide, stating that Ojwang's body bore injuries on the head, shoulders, and hand, suggesting possible torture and murder. This would later be confirmed by an autopsy report that revealed that the teacher died as a result of a neck injury and had neck compressions.
