Kajiado West Member of Parliament (MP) George Sunkuyia was on Tuesday, May 27 arrested by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) legislator was taken into custody over allegations that he forged a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) document.

He was accused of submitting the fake certificate—purportedly issued by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC)—to Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) back in January 2012.

“On 30th day of January 2012 at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) Juja within Kiambu County, knowingly and fraudulently uttered to the Registrar Academic Affairs JKUAT, a forged a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Serial No. 2988068, with a mean Grade of C+ purporting it to be a genuine certificate issued to you by the Kenya National Examination Council,” reads a charge sheet in part.

Sunkuyia was escorted to the EACC headquarters at Integrity Centre, where he was processed before appearing in court.

He is expected to face charges for giving false information to the EACC, forgery, and presenting a fake document.

Before joining the National Assembly, Sunkuyia served as a councillor in the Olkejuado County Council from 2002 to 2013, and later as an MCA for Keekonyokie Ward between 2013 and 2017.

His arrest adds to a growing list of public officials caught up in scandals over fake academic credentials. In February 2025, Juja MP George Ndung’u Koimburi appeared in a Kiambu court facing six charges—three for forgery and three for presenting false documents.

He was accused of faking a KCSE certificate in late 1994, along with two forged certificates from JKUAT. He denied all charges and was granted a Ksh 200,000 cash bail.

Back in June 2024, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi was cleared of similar allegations after the court found the prosecution’s case weak and the investigation flawed.

These incidents underscore the EACC’s continued crackdown on fraudulent academic papers in public service. In January 2025 alone, five government officials were taken to court over forged certificates used to land jobs or promotions.
