On Friday, May 23, the government announced that construction of the Nairobi Green Park Underpass is now 88 per cent complete.

According to the Government Delivery Unit (GDU), the modern infrastructure project aims to improve pedestrian access and enhance traffic flow into the central business district (CBD).

Inspired by world-class urban designs—such as London’s famous pedestrian underpasses—the underpass will offer a safe and efficient route beneath the busy Uhuru Highway, directly connecting Uhuru Park, the Nairobi Railway Station, and Haile Selassie Avenue to the CBD.

Situated at the high-traffic junction of Uhuru Highway and Haile Selassie Avenue, Deputy Chief of Staff for Performance and Delivery Management, Eliud Owalo, noted that the underpass is designed to protect pedestrians by eliminating the need to cross congested roadways.

“This Green Park underpass is not just any construction project; it is the embodiment of a vision to modernise Nairobi’s urban landscape,” said Owalo, during an inspection tour with engineers and officials from the GDU.

The Green Park underpass is set to include well-lit walkways, retail spaces, and CCTV monitoring—similar to the multifunctional pedestrian tunnels seen in cities like London, Amsterdam, and Hong Kong, where such infrastructure also serves as vibrant social and commercial spaces.

According to the Government Delivery Unit (GDU), those using the underpass can expect a clean, secure environment designed to resemble a mini plaza rather than a traditional tunnel.

Commuters will enjoy amenities such as coffee shops, kiosks, and newsstands, turning an ordinary walk through the city into a smooth, enjoyable urban experience.
