At least 12 people have been killed following a passenger aircraft crash in Kwale County on Tuesday, October 28, an incident confirmed by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA).

According to KCAA, the plane, a Cessna Caravan, — which was carrying tourists — had departed from Diani early morning en route to Kichwa Tembo in Maasai Mara.

Though the cause of the crash is yet to be determined, preliminary reports suggested poor visibility linked to bad weather may have contributed to the tragedy.

“Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) wishes to confirm that an aircraft registration number 5Y-CCA, on its way from Diani to Kichwa Tembo, crashed at 0530Z,” the authority said in a statement.

Images obtained by Viral Tea showed the aircraft engulfed in flames, with debris scattered across the crash site.

Additional footage captured first responders at the scene conducting rescue operations as government agencies began investigations into the cause and impact of the accident.

“The aircraft had 12 persons on board. Government agencies are already on site to establish the cause of the accident and its impact,” KCAA added.

Kwale County Police Commander Abdillahi Alio confirmed that the plane went down shortly after takeoff in Tsimba, an area known for its dense forest cover.

The tragedy occurred just two days after the Kenya Meteorological Department issued a coastal weather alert, warning residents to brace for heavy rains and strong winds associated with tropical storm Chenge.

In a Sunday update, the department said the storm was located about 500 kilometres north of Madagascar and was slowly moving westward across the Indian Ocean at roughly 11 kilometres per hour.

Meteorologists had warned that once Chenge reached the coasts of Kenya and Tanzania, it would bring intense rainfall, strong winds, and high ocean waves.

This morning, Diani experienced heavy rain, strong gusts, and thunder — conditions that have since raised questions over why the flight was cleared for departure amid such volatile weather.
