Several people were on Wednesday, August 10 trapped after a building four-storeys tall collapsed in Infinity Area, Mwiki Estate, Nairobi County.

Photos and videos seen by Viral Tea showed several people being helped out by locals from the building who had responded to the incident.

It was further confirmed by the St John Ambulance on social media, which deployed emergency response teams to the scene.

Reports indicate that only one has been rescued from the debris, but there are fears of more people trapped inside.

"A building has collapsed in Infinity Area in Mwiki Estate, Nairobi. Our emergency response teams rushing to the scene. More information to follow shortly," the ambulance stated.

Back in May, an unknown number of people were trapped inside the debris of a building that collapsed in Ruiru, Kiambu County.

First responders from the Kiambu Fire Department reported to the scene of the accident and mounted rescue operations. However, two people were confirmed dead during the rescue operations.

A section of it was demolished by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to pave way for the expansion of the Eastern Bypass into a dual carriageway at a cost of Ksh12.5 billion.

The road was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday, July 31 alongside the Ksh87.9 billion Nairobi Expressway after public trials.

It includes five new major vehicular crossings and six-lane dual carriageways at the busy sections of the road.

He expressed optimism that the expressway and the bypass road will significantly address the nightmare of traffic gridlocks in Nairobi estimated to cost the nation over Ksh5 billion annually in lost productivity time and wasted fuel.

“Since we opened the road for public trials in April, it now takes between 15 and 24 minutes to drive from Mlolongo in Machakos County to Rironi in Kiambu County. Before the expressway, that journey would take at least three hours which is the equivalent of flying to Addis Ababa and back,” President Kenyatta said.
