Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong'ondo Were died as a result of excessive bleeding and the collapse of vital organs, an autopsy conducted by Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor has confirmed.

The postmortem revealed that the MP sustained five gunshot wounds during a fatal attack on the evening of Wednesday, April 30, along Ngong Road.

The bullets struck him in the chest and hands, with several piercing critical internal organs—injuries that Dr. Oduor stated are typically fatal due to the severity of internal damage and rapid blood loss.

According to investigators, the assailant had been trailing the MP on a sports motorcycle. Upon reaching Ngong Road, the gunman dismounted from the pillion section and opened fire at close range at the lawmaker at least five times, hitting him before fleeing the scene.

Dr. Oduor emphasised that the nature of the injuries left little chance of survival, as some bullets damaged organs essential to sustaining life.

On Friday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced that a forensic reconstruction of the MP’s movements had been completed, tracing his steps from the time he left Parliament up to the moment he was shot. The agency added that the autopsy findings would play a crucial role in advancing the ongoing investigation.

Meanwhile, new information continues to emerge regarding suspects linked to the killing of MP Charles Ong'ondo Were, with police confirming that four individuals are currently in custody in connection with the case.

On Sunday, the National Police Service (NPS) disclosed that the suspects behind the brutal attack may be affiliated with the Mjahidin gang—a well-known criminal group operating out of Nairobi’s Eastlands area.

According to the police, the gang in question had long been under surveillance for its involvement in a series of violent crimes in the densely populated area of the city.

After their arraignment, the court directed that the four suspects be held in separate police stations across Nairobi as investigations continue.

At the time of MP Were’s assassination, he was accompanied by his bodyguard and driver, both of whom were left unharmed by the assailants. These circumstances have led investigators to suspect that the killing was targeted and premeditated.

Following his death, various theories have circulated regarding the motive behind the attack, particularly after revelations surfaced that MP Were had hinted at threats to his life just two months prior.

In a Sunday update, the NPS urged individuals not directly involved in the investigation to refrain from speculation, emphasising the importance of allowing investigators to conduct a thorough and unbiased inquiry.

In a surprising development, reports indicate that a serving police officer may have been involved in the assassination.
