Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino claimed on Tuesday, July 18 that he has been arrested.

A source close to the lawmaker confirmed his arrest when contacted by Viral Tea.

Taking to his Facebook page, Owino alleged that he was detained by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) after he arrived from Mombasa.

"Have been detained by the DCI JKIA after my arrival from Mombasa. Currently under arrest," he wrote.

The motive of the arrest was not clear by the time of publishing this article, coming merely hours before the start of the planned Azimio la Umoja protests on Wednesday, July 19.

On Sunday, July 16, Owino paid a visit to protesters from his constituency who were arrested during the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition demos and promised to pay their cash bail to guarantee freedom.

"Today I was in solidarity with 16 of my constituents at Ruai Police Station. They were unlawfully arrested yesterday at Jacaranda Grounds.

"They’ll be taken to court tomorrow and I will pay their cash bail," he stated on social media.

The vocal Raila Odinga supporter quoted a Bible verse from Matthew 25:36 where Jesus showed his followers that true faith doesn't stay locked within the walls of a church building.

For the same reason, the MP stepped out to ensure the safety of his constituents arrested during Azimio la Umoja demos.

During the anti-government demos, around 10 people were killed, and over 30 were arrested in connection to causing chaos in what was branded peaceful protests.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki on Wednesday, July 12 laid blame on Azimio la Umoja leader, Raila Odinga over the Wednesday protests, warning that the government will not relent in taking action against the organisers of the protests and Kenyans involved in destroying infrastructure and property.

In a statement that was first published by Gerald Bitok, the Director of Public Communication at State House, Kindiki accused the propagators of the violence of borrowing a leaf from individuals allied to Raila, a man the CS termed as one who has grown fond of violent politics.

"From the 1982 attempted coup-de-tat to the 2007/08 post-election violence, this same politician and his collaborators, then and now, are associated with risky politics that has occasionally plunged our Country into near destruction," he stated.

As a result, the CS vowed to punish all those who took part, directly or indirectly, in the well-orchestrated violation of public safety and security of the nation.

"The Government has tonight mobilized all the law enforcement agencies of the State and the institutions of our country's criminal justice system to conclude investigations urgently and proceed to the arrest and prosecution of all those involved in the planning and execution of the crimes committed today, including those who funded or otherwise aided or abetted the offenders," he added.

While addressing the media on Wednesday, July 12, in Nairobi, Raila blamed police officers for the violence inflicted on his supporters which led to injuries and deaths during the protests.
