Online photo and video design and editing platform Canva is down for many users across the world.

On Saturday, June 21, the Australia-based platform suffered a widespread outage, with several users taking to social media platforms to report the issues while logging in to their accounts and accessing projects.

In Kenya, Viral Tea was not spared when our team tried to access the platform as of this afternoon, only to be met with "There was an issue on our end. Try again." Whereas the website was up and running, the designs were unable to load.

Further spot checks have revealed that the downtime issue affected other major media outlets, some of which have had to switch to alternative design platforms.

According to Downdetector.com, which only tracks outages by collating status reports from a series of sources, including user-submitted errors on its platform, up to 397 reports were made as of 3.02 pm local time.

In a statement via its status page, which we managed to access, Canva stated that "We’re aware of an issue where users are unable to access Canva and are encountering timeout errors when attempting to load the platform."

"Our engineering team is actively investigating and working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible," stated Canva.

At the time of going to press, the platform said it had managed to resolve the incident following an outage that lasted for approximately one hour.

The internet lit up with memes on Saturday afternoon after Canva went down. With their design work suddenly interrupted, users flocked to various social media platforms, flooding timelines with funny posts and jokes about the unexpected outage. Netizens wasted no time spreading the word across platforms about the glitch on the popular image and video editing site.

What Is Canva?

Canva is a graphic design platform that makes it easy for anyone — from beginners to professionals— to create stunning visual content.

Launched in 2013, Canva offers an intuitive, drag-and-drop interface that allows users to design everything from social media posts and presentations to flyers, logos, and even videos, without needing advanced design skills. It runs on both web and mobile, making it accessible to a wide audience, including students, small business owners, marketers, and creators.

What sets Canva apart is its massive library of templates, fonts, icons, stock photos, and design elements. This gives users a head start when designing and helps them achieve a professional look in minutes.

It also offers team collaboration features, allowing multiple users to work on a project in real-time — a big plus for remote teams or classroom settings.

Canva has evolved beyond just being a design tool; it's now a full-fledged content creation suite. It offers branding kits for businesses, print services, AI-powered tools like Magic Resize and Magic Write, and even a paid Pro plan with expanded features.

Its accessibility, combined with powerful capabilities, has helped Canva become one of the go-to tools in the creator economy — in other words, it is the design plug for the digital age.
