Mohammed Ahmed Kanyare, an Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Presiding Officer in charge of Towheed polling station in Elnur Tula Tula Ward in Eldas constituency, claims he was abandoned by the Wafula Chebukati-led commission after he was shot three times by unknown gunmen.

Speaking to the media on Sunday, August 21, Kanyare noted that he was shot at close range which led to the amputation of his leg.

He added that neither the commission nor Chebukati has reached out to him or any of his family members, despite being injured while at work.

"I have not heard from the commission that I was working for since they left me unattended to. Even a 'sorry' from them would have been better.

"I have no communication from the commission neither has any of my family members has heard from the commission that I was hurt working for," he disclosed.

Kanyare noted that he was preparing to deliver the Forms 34A to the Returning Officer when individuals who claimed to be police officers invaded the venue.

The gunshots that were fired forced everyone to take cover for safety purposes before the individuals stormed the compound.

"There were gunshots that were heard. I don't know whether it was within or outside the compound. Everybody ran to the available rooms.

"I went back to the tallying center to queue again and that was when some officers came in, ordered lights to be switched off and everybody to lie down," he added.

During the commotion, he complied with the directive but he believed that he was the target of the ambush. An unidentified officer approached him and shot him without any explanation, leaving him on the floor crying for help.

He was then rushed to the Wajir County Hospital but when he arrived at the hospital, the medical staff informed him that his leg was severely injured and that the only option was to have it amputated.

"Since it was near the podium where the electoral officials were sitting, I took a few steps back and laid down. An officer came from nowhere, shot at me and left me crying for help.

"Why they chose me, I don't know... It was a targeted incident and I want justice for what happened to me," he added.

Investigations are ongoing into the incident which has been raising concerns regarding the safety of Returning Officers and other officials contracted by the IEBC to facilitate the August 9 general elections.

A returning officer in Embakasi East was reported missing during the vote counting process and was found dead a day after the presidential election results were announced.
