Police on Monday, April 24 launched a manhunt for a driver who on Sunday, April 23 injured a petrol station attendant in Gitaru, Kikuyu by running over her in a bid to avoid paying for fuel.

In CCTV footage released by the petrol station, Leah Wambui had finished cleaning the windscreen of the Toyota Vitz, whose driver accelerated away just as she was walking to the driver's side to confirm payment of the fuel.

The suspect was driving the white-coloured vehicle with the registration number KCY 856U and had filled his tank with fuel worth Ksh3,300.

Here's the video:

The driver sped off, leaving Wambui sprawled on the floor as her colleagues frantically attempted to chase after the vehicle. Wambui however managed to recollect herself, looking at the driver disappear, albeit in shock.

The driver, who was on the run, also narrowly avoided colliding with a trailer as he was joining the highway, averting a scenario of karma striking back in form of a road accident.

The victim filed a report at the Kikuyu Police Station under the complaint 'obtaining credit injury'. The incident happened at 2 am on Sunday.

Whistleblowers compelled the National Police Service (NPS) to move with speed and arrest the victim, which they believed would be made easier by tracking him as the vehicle's number plate was in the public domain.

They claimed that the same motorist had committed the same offence on April 10, when he fled after consuming fuel worth Ksh3,000 at a petrol station in Sigona.

"Can't they change the system so that customers pay first before fueling because this has become too much," one user proposed changes to the payment system in petrol stations.

In 2023, social media reports were awash recently of drivers notorious for refuelling their cars and speeding off petrol stations without settling the bill.

On Thursday, February 9, a driver owning an Audi sedan was captured on CCTV fleeing from a Shell Petrol Station in Karen without paying the bill, the second time he was caught in the act.

Road Safety agency Sikikia Road Safety called upon the police to take stern action on the young man, who found himself in similar circumstances when he had made away with yet another bill four days prior at a petrol station in Kikuyu.

Sikika noted that the driver’s parents had stepped in to settle a Ksh8,000 bill after he was exposed for the first time.

The Audi young man has stolen fuel worth Ksh7,000 again. National Police Service (NPS) arrest this young man on a serious note and let him pay double. Just the other day his parents settled a bill for him after driving away without paying," read a statement.

On January 5, a motorist escaped without paying Ksh12,000 for fuel in Imara Daima as well as Jogoo road where it was reported that the driver of the Mark X car model drove to the station and asked the petrol attendant for fuel.

Another motorist had driven off from a station along Jogoo Road after refilling his car with fuel worth Ksh10,000. However, after the incident went viral on social media platforms, the motorist accepted to settle the bill.

A Nairobi driver of an expensive Land Rover Discovery car was exposed the previous week after he went to a petrol station to buy fuel worth Ksh10,000 only to speed off without paying.
