Police in Isinya, Kajiado County are investigating two deaths feared to have been caused by adulterated liquor on Friday, February 9, 2024, and today, Sunday, February 11, 2024.

The two deaths occurred in Kitengela town in Kajiado. In the first incident, a 41-year-old is reported to have died hours after he consumed liquor at a joint within the Panai area.

According to his family, he complained of blurred vision and discomfort but succumbed while receiving treatment.

"The doctor's report, which we currently want to keep confidential, revealed that he died after consuming adulterated liquor. By the time he succumbed, his eyesight was lost and rapidly developed organ failure. We are mourning as a family and we would not wish to give more details,’’ a close relative told the media.

In another incident, a 52-year-old male died a day after being reported to have been ill and eyesight lost after consuming liquor at a joint within the town.

A doctor who treated the middle-aged male confirmed that the deceased died as a result of killer brew.

The incidents sparked fear and speculations among Kitengela residents over the existence of killer liquor within the populous town amid concerns of uncontrolled cheap liquor especially Chang’aa sold in the back streets of the town.

Meanwhile, reports revealed the role of a police station in Mwea, Kirinyaga County as the illicit brew that has so far claimed the lives of 23 people was revealed to be an exhibit stored at Kiamaciri police station.

A police officer who declined to be named revealed that four rogue police officers had sold the exhibits to the owner of the bar at Ksh20,000, with each officer taking home Ksh5,000.

The bar owner in Kangai Village in Mwea then sold the brew to unsuspicious locals at a cheap price, who indulged in the drink, unaware of the trouble that was to befall them.

The killer brew was also reported to be a court exhibit that had been in the station for months and was most likely expired and poisonous.

Several residents of Kangai and Kandongu villages in Mwea complained that the rogue police in the area are involved in the illegal trade, calling for investigations into the conduct of officers from the Kiamaciri police station.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Friday directed the deployment of new police officers to Kirinyaga County to enhance the crackdown on the sale and consumption of illicit brew, warning rogue officers that they would be fired if caught aiding the businesses.

"Illicit brews are thriving because the officers are busy taking bribes. Had President William Ruto and I not intervened, the entire generation in this region would have been wiped out by poisonous alcohol in ten years,” he stated.

Gachagua further directed that the Kirinyaga County Commissioner, County Police Commander, County Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the County Administration Police Commander be recalled to Nairobi, as investigations into the Kangai incident continued.

The order was later confirmed by Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki.
