Former Kisii Governor James Ongwae has resigned from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

Addressing the media on Thursday, November 3, Ongwae announced his resignation from the Raila Odinga-led party, alongside ex-Woman Representative and ODM Vice Chairperson Janet Ongera.

They cited mismanagement and unfair treatment as the reasons for their resignation.

"We have today arrived at this decision having carefully taken stock of the activities preceding the last general election and more so the ill manner the party treated us and our supporters through political patronage by individuals who never had the interest of our community at heart," said Ongwae.

The duo added that they will reveal their next political move soon even as they said they are keen on joining parties that will put the interest of the Gusii community at heart.

"As the Holy Bible says in Ecclesiastes 3:1, 'there is a time and season for everything, and for us, it is time to exit," Ongwae added.

On Friday, September 9, Ongwae and Ongera accompanied former Transport Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS), Chris Obure and other leaders from Kisii County to President William Ruto's residence in Karen before the Head of State was sworn in on September 13.

In a statement dated Friday, September 9, Ongwae stated that he joined the Kenya Kwanza coalition from the Raila Odinga-led opposing Azimio la Umoja coalition and had fruitful discussions with Ruto while wishing him the best of luck in his reign.

"Had insightful discussions with the 5th President of Kenya William Ruto. Congratulations Mr President, best wishes, good health & God's favour in your tenure as you steer our country toward economic recovery. God bless Kenya!" he stated.

Ongera had lost the Kisii seat to Doris Donya of Wiper.

Ongwae served his last term as Kisii governor this year, having held the office for two terms after he was elected under the ODM ticket. He was one of Raila's biggest supporters.

His move came as a slew of politicians dumped the Azimio coalition for Kenya Kwanza, which left a bad taste in the mouth of the former's supporters.

It rattled Azimio running mate, Martha Karua who accused the Head of State of planning to bleed dry the opposition and reduce its capability of keeping the Kenya Kwanza government in check.

"This is a deliberate and sustained offensive to decimate the opposition and return the country to a de facto one-party state," said Karua on Twitter.
