Prof Paul Wainaina, who was sacked by the Kenyatta University Council as Vice-Chancellor (VC), returned to his famed post on Thursday, November 3.

Videos seen by Viral Tea showed the professor flanked by nearly 100 students celebrating with fanfare as he made his way back into the campus he called home.

Vuvuzelas, cheers from happy students as well as praise songs from them and the staff rented the air as the Kenyatta University fraternity welcomed back their 'special one'.

Speaking in front of the university fraternity, Wainaina expressed delight at returning to the top helm following interventions by President William Ruto's government, promising to deal with the issues affecting the university head-on.

"When I was with you, the last time when I said this is the last time I am addressing you as a vice chancellor, I knew what was coming and it came with fury. I don't want to say exactly what happened but for you to see me here alive is a miracle.

"That intervention has made it possible for me to stand here and say I'm back, I'm with you and we are going to handle the issues that actually made me go away," he said.

Wainaina further termed the intervention as God-sent and that the issue of the 410 acres of land that threw him into loggerheads with former President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration was a thing of the past.

"God has used the new government to allow wrongs to be rectified using our fundamental principles. The 410 acres is still intact and the title is with us," he assured.

Wainaina was terminated by the KU council and his announcement was made on the same day that Ruto was declared president following the 2022 general elections. He stepped down from his role after refusing to give up part of the university land to the government for the World Health Organization (WHO) project.

However, the Employment and Labour Relations Court reinstated him. Justice Jacob Gakeri on Tuesday, July 26 issued the order that temporarily blocked the suspension of Wainaina.

"That pending the hearing and determination of this Application inter-partes, this Honourable Court be pleased to issue a temporary order suspending the implementation of the decision contained in the letter dated July 12, 2022, by Professor Crispus Kiamba in suspending, terminating and/or dismissing the Petitioner from the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, rendering his position vacant and/or revoking his salary," the judge ruled.

Wainaina's lawyer Manwa Hosea had asked the court to issue a conservatory order suspending the decision as per the July 12 letter by Professor Crispus Kiamba that replaced Wainaina with Prof Waceke Wanjohi as the VC in an acting capacity.

Hosea further urged the court to suspend an advertisement for the position of Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor as well as the implementation of the decision by the new university council to suspend Wainaina over alleged gross misconduct and insubordination.

Wainaina is also part of the education reforms task force to review the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC). It will assess before recommending the appropriate structures to be adopted and implemented in CBC.
